Reflective Essay: A Personal Analysis
Yesterday I posted on Facebook that my Evita rehearsals were commencing that evening. I also wrote that it's hard to believe that it has been over two years since I last performed in a full production and what is UP with that?! My friend, Joey, responded with, "For real, woman. The world needs more you." As soon as I read his comment I began to cry. (Remember in the Introduction of this book when I thanked Judy Greer for making me feel better about being a "crier?" Well. . . Now you see what I mean.)

His kind and thoughtful words of appreciation touched me deeply because I have had two years of frustration in regards to my theatrical endeavors. With each audition I have endured, I told myself that it would be my last one, that I think

I strongly disagree because I believe that auditions are a two way street. It is not only an opportunity for the director to check me out, but it is also an opportunity for me to check them out. Just as there are many considerations which go into casting a show, there are many factors that may lead me to draw the conclusion that a particular show and/or role I just auditioned for is not a good fit. It's no different than a job interview, as far as I'm concerned. I may apply for a job and decide after the interview that the potential boss, the company, and the position does not suit me after all. Just because I interviewed and was offered a position with a company, does not mean I have to accept their offer. If I do, knowing full well that it's not a good fit, I am making a decision out of desperation and fear. No decision made from a place of fear ever turns out well.

Last summer I was offered roles in two different productions, which I politely turned down. While they were both shows I really thought I wanted to do, I did not get cast as the characters I wanted and the roles offered to me were not ones I felt any strong connection to. Rather than spend my valuable time playing characters that did not move me, I preferred leaving my schedule open so that Bob and I could travel to

Later in life when I was 17 or so I started my acting career. I played my first role in a production of Shakespeare's Richard III and turned into a star. As you can see I had everything going for me. I was on tour all over the country with a Shakespearean acting company and I was adored by many. But, then a respiratory illness in 1863 meant that my fame was over, and that I would have to take temporary leave from the stage. There is something I didn’t tell you though, Just days prior to Abraham Lincoln's famed Gettysburg Address that same year, I saw him…. He was watching my show “The Marble Heart” at Ford’s theater, and this is where the good part of my story…

Young De Trejo A.K.A momma. I met Mrs. Trejo my sophomore year due to having joined our theatre UIL program here at Sam Houston. At first glance during contest mode Mrs. Trejo can be very scary and intimidating, but really she is assertive and truly caring just like any mother would be. Ms. Trejo was a blessing soon to come. Throughout these past three years I have went through a multitude of things and one of the only people to be there for me was Mrs. Trejo. She was not only there for me but she cared for me like I was one of her own children, and she was like his with our whole theatre group. While not only being a caring mother figure Mrs. Trejo has also been a great and inspiring acting coach and theatre teacher. When first joining the theatre program I had stage fright and had never acted before but when Mrs. Trejo was done with me I was a completely different person, I am now outgoing and love to be on stage portraying characters of all kinds. Mrs. Trejo doesn’t get enough recognition for what she does because she does more than almost anyone I know. For this I want to say Thank you Mrs. Trejo for all that you have done and continue to do, your truly a blessing, I love you and thank…

Throughout the past two years at Staten Island Academy, this learning environment has given me many opportunities that I could not have gotten at any other school. I'm not the most athletic, but I do very much enjoy playing sports. Here at the Academy middle school, I was able to experience any sport that I wanted to play, without a tryout system. The music and theater program here has given me countless opportunities to better my skills as an actor and a baritonist. I have been able to act in two plays, "Schoolhouse Rock Live, Jr." and "Cyrano deBurgershack." They helped me learn the ins and outs of acting, as I was a beginner before I came to the Academy. In the orchestra, I have appeared in 5 concerts, all of which have been immensely successful thanks to our conductor, Ms. Wheatley. There have also been many truly amazing teachers that have guided me to academic success. Specifically, Mr. Levine helps me to understand…

As I was beginning a small career in the entertainment business, my mother was my source of encouragement. She inspired me to continue in the entertainment business because she knew that this was an opportunity of a life time. By the time I was eleven, I began using my voice in Spanish-language version of American films. Acting was becoming clear to me that it was my new calling and I cherished it more than singing and dancing. Then I received my first Broadway role at age thirteen where I was passing eleven and looking as if I was nine. I always looked young for my age. The Broadway drama I stared in was called Skydrift. Shortly after my appearance in the Broadway show, I was contacted by Hollywood talent scouts. The scout informed me that when the time was right he would notify me.…

My informational interview with Justin Nichols taught me a lot more about unscripted casting and showed me how everyone’s path to success in the entertainment industry is unique. Although I had met professionals in television who did not think about having a career in the industry until after college, almost all of them broke into the TV business as assistants for executives. Justin’s path is extremely interesting because he had never worked in television, but his personality and networking strengths led him to producer job for his first job in the industry. Despite Justin’s lack of experience in television, he intelligently recognized his skills from previous jobs that would be useful in casting, such as his friendliness, his interviewing experience, and his ability to relate to people. Speaking with Justin about his path to being a Casting Producer assured me that there is no one “right way”…

Garland stopped me and asked if I could escort her to the nearest private restroom. While we were in route to the third floor, we had the most wonderful conversation. She talked about the Hollywood lifestyle and what her life was like after becoming a household name, everything was great. But it was the conversation on the way back that made both of us open each other’s eyes to one another’s life. Before getting on the elevator, she asked me “why do the good people that come into her life always have to leave so soon?” I never answered that question, in fact, i didn’t say anything. I just gave her a gentle kiss on the cheek, wiped the tears from her eyes, and healed her hand all the way to the ground floor; and finally said “I love you.” Now here we are, forty-seven years later and she gone. All she ever wanted was to know what a normal life was like, and I bowed to give it to her; even if that meant I was to call her honey for the rest of her life. That why, when I look at her at this very moment, I feel as complete as I did when she was by my side, because I know I was able to achieve what she always…

Here I am sitting on the plane to London for the third time. I know, three is an awful lot of times considering how expensive tickets are nowadays. It’s just I haven’t been able to decide whether or not I am ready to leave everything behind. Everything , as in my cute apartment, my adorable cat, and best of all my friends, the same friends who met me the first day of kindergarten; The same friends who helped me through thick and thin, from tying my shoes to making new friends, to applying to colleges, and so much more, I can’t even tell you all the things they’ve done for me because there are so many I can not list them all. When I think of them it makes it harder to leave, but it’s time that I go. My dream, ever since I was little, was to be the best singer there ever was. Growing up, I used to write my own songs. That was when my mom was alive. She loved to hear me sing. She loved the music, and lyrics I wrote. I went to college for music, got my Bachelors of Music’s Degree, I learned about theory, aural skills, piano skills, acting and received private lessons. During the sophomore year of college I was introduced to a producer, from there things vaulted upward. I started singing at places in Boston, Toronto, Montreal and places all over the United States, I had sung everywhere, but I had never left the country. The first time I was supposed to leave was to sing for the soccer game in France. To sing their National anthem, but that year my mother had died. I never got on the plane. The second time I was recruited to sing was a couple of months later. At that time one of my close childhood friends was getting married there was no way I was missing that. Now finally, I’ve decided to go to London, this time I’m not going to miss an opportunity. This time I’m prepared, ready for anything that heads my way. I’m looking forward to this trip to London, there’s no turning back. The only thing I’m taking with me are my memories. The…
