Reflection Statement - Representations of War
English reflection statement – Representations of War

My PowerPoint collage is about my understanding of how war is represented. It explores the idea of how I believe that war is a negative connotation in society. Throughout my PowerPoint I have used images that relate well to the 3 pieces of texts that I decided to represent; The Send Off, The Charge of the Light Brigade and Saving Private Ryan.

In my first slide I designed a title page stating the title of my PowerPoint and wrote my name underneath. I used the colours black and red to symbolize the colours that I associate with war. Red being used for passion, blood and love. Black being used for danger, fear and death. I used a large font (Franklin Gothic Medium, size 54) to make the title stand out clearly and a smaller font size of 22 for my name so that the title “Representations of War” was the salient image in this slide.

For my second slide I have used hyperlinks to make it easier to navigate to each of my 3 slides. I wrote at the top of the slide “Select one:” so that the person viewing my PowerPoint knows what to do, because otherwise it may look a little confusing and the viewer may not know what to do. I included 3 hyperlinks to each of my texts, a button for The Send Off, The Charge of the Light Brigade and Saving Private. By clicking on one of these it will take you straight to that slide. In the bottom of each of my slides I included a home button, which navigates you back to the main screen to choose another slide. Or you could just click the arrows on the keyboard to go to the next slide.

My third slide is where I introduce my prescribed text, The Send Off. I included a black and white collage of photos that are associated with the poem the send off. I also used 3 quotes from the poem and then used pictures that went with those quotes. I have used the colours black, red and white as they all contrast nicely against each other. The bright red writing works well against the black and

I have chosen three different types of media to share with you about how significant the effects or consequences of war can be. I have selected some pictures from Eddie Adams the article “After Duty, Dogs Suffer Like Soldiers” and the video: James Nachtwey’s Searing Photo’s of War. These three pieces of media will definitely astound you. You may never think that war could have such a dramatic effect on people or animals.…

My collage represents the theme of freedom and confinement from the novel “Of Mice and Men”. The novel is set in America during the Depression and this context is shown in the way I’ve used the front page of the New York newspaper from the day of the Wall Street crash as the A3 page for my collage. I’ve deliberately washed out the newspaper to symbolize that the Depression was important in the novel but didn’t take over the story. As a female, I was annoyed the way the novel made women out negatively by using words like ‘tramp’, ‘bitch’ and ‘tart’ and the way men in the novel used them as prostitutes, so my representation shows the freedom and confinement of Curly’s wife – I’ve given her power in my representation because her and the other women had none in the novel and I’ve made the men all fairly insignificant in my representation because it wasn’t fair that they had all the power in the book.…

For my history slide I thought it would be perfect to put in a picture of the building when it was known as agricultural hall that was in black and white. This way, students would look at it and almost immediately know that that page is about history. In my text about history, I chose to go with three main points, highlighting the major events that happened from 1893-1992. I did this because I wanted my audience to know of Catt Hall’s long and extensive history which is very important in understanding the state of the building…

As a young adult in today’s society, I am constantly surrounded and influenced by images in the media. Whether a photograph, a film, a news segment on T.V., or something on the internet, visual images are becoming an increasingly powerful influence. During a time of war and destruction, America is constantly shown images of soldiers fighting, innocent citizens dying, and terror among those who want peace. Throughout history this has been the case with each war. However, it’s the images shown after war that I find most moving. The image of the five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising an American flag above the rubble of the Battle of Iwo Jima is one of the most powerful images I’ve seen. Iwo Jima was a battle that was fought from February 19, 1945 until March 26, 1945. America was attempting to capture the island from Japanese forces due to its two air bases and its close vicinity to the main lands of Japan. Japan was heavily armed but the American soldiers had a widespread navy fleet and a strong ground team and won the battle. When the fight had ended an estimated 22,000 of Japan’s soldiers had died along with 7,000 American soldiers. The dust had cleared and standing among the ruins were these American soldiers, proudly raising the flag of their country. This image of Iwo Jima, shot by Joe Rosenthal, not only shows the bravery and hard work of these soldiers through its use of emotional appeals, motifs, and composition, but also the destruction caused by war.…

    Visual Analysis Of Wicked

The playbill design for the Broadway musical Wicked, is a good example of graphic design. It is able to convey the attitude of the show through its imaging, paired with the title. The design works with a color scheme that consists of black, white, green, beige and a hint of red. The image shows two women, one in the middle who is seen head on and the other on the right, whose profile is seen. As one looks at the image ones eyes quickly go to the woman in the center who is composed of three colors, black, green and red. The eyes are drawn to the hint of deep red that is used to create a crooked smile, which is the only part that the viewer is able to see of her face. The image effectively uses color blocking to create her clothing, hair, and hat, which dips forward to partially obscure her face, which is made up of green, which can also be seen in the background.…
