Reading Recovery Summary
The article describes, in brief, the reading intervention program known as Reading Recovery. Reading Recovery is a non-profit program which, contrary to the belief of some school administrators, is more cost effective because of its short duration and its long term gains for students. The goal of the program is described as providing accelerated learning (without exception) for first grade children who are falling far below their classmates in reading and writing. Completing the 12-20-week program allows students to progress and catch up to their peers, moving from the bottom of the class to within the class average. The research shows that children who have benefited from intervention with Reading Recovery continue to experience success moving forward which in turn breaks the potential cycle of failure. How does this article relate to our class discussions, readings, and other classes that you have had?

I can safely attest to the fact that every professor in every education class at Queens has discussed, on multiple occasions, the critical importance of creating a safe learning environment for students. Without this environment, it makes a teacher’s job so much harder and leaves the students at a disadvantage if they are not in a space where they can learn successfully. In this class too, we brainstormed how to set up a classroom community ready for students to learn.
We know from our discussion in class that an effective teacher reflects, monitors and evaluates a student’s learning, and these were attributes which described a Reading Recovery teacher. We want our students to use effective strategies as they take on more complex tasks at school and our reading this week validates that concept (Chapters 3 & 4, Literacy for the 21st Century). My classes in Balanced Literacy, Writing and Social Studies all noted, as our text states, that students learn effectively when they are given multiple modalities in which to learn and process
