Qantas Report
1. Executive Summary
Qantas is one of the most recognised and longest running Australian companies. It is the world’s second oldest airline, and has a successful history to uphold (Qantas Web Site, 2008).
Identification of target markets is imperative to Qantas’s success. Mortished (2003) explains that Qantas uses Behavioural segmentation to select its target market. This allows for the market to be divided and products and advertising to be specifically aimed at the most responsive customers. Qantas divides its target market into two main groups; Business and leisure
Qantas has three major problems. 1.) Fuel efficiency, 2.) Lack of communication between employers and employees, 3.) Competition in the corporate customer market (Ferguson 2003).
To overcome these issues, Qantas must modify aircraft sizes and engines to become more fuel efficient and reduce CO2 emissions over coming years. During the next two years, Qantas should plan to reduce industrial conflict by reorganizing the communication system and its organizational structure, making it more flexible and adaptive, thus empowering employees with project management responsibilities. Grievance procedures must be improved with a formal process to resolve work conflicts. Qantas must maintain and increase its corporate customer market share in order to remain profitable and successful.
Over the next 5 years Qantas aims to hedge fuel prices and use more efficient aircraft to limit further fuel costs improve employee/employer relationships by reducing the number of employment relations disputes and retain corporate market share by enhancing facilities and lounges to appeal to corporate travellers.

    Qantas Groups’ performance over the 2007 to 2011 period has been relatively poor mainly as a result of the global financial crisis adversely affecting the firm’s international operations. Strategically, Qantas is likely to continue to dominate the domestic airline industry with the success of Jetstar prompting expansion into the Asia Pacific region. The most significant threats facing Qantas include high fuel prices, the value of the Australian dollar and industrial action. A comprehensive financial analysis reveals that compared to other airlines, Qantas is showing strong signs of recovery despite there being inherent weaknesses in its liquidity. A review of the firm’s annual report revealed the presence of various accounting issues such distortion in its depreciation calculation, however it was determined that they were not significant enough to greatly affect Qantas overall financial position. Overall the firm was found to be in a financially sound position and through the implementation of its “QFuture” program; profitability is expected to continue to improve in following years. An evaluation of the Group’s equity found that the stock price for which Qantas is currently trading is overvalued by $0.50. This is further supported by the fact that over the last year the price of Qantas stocks has been subject to a downward trend suggesting that investors may have already identified the overvaluation. As a result of the findings of our analysis we therefore make a “sell” recommendation for Qantas stock.…

    Qantas has had a series of disputes with Transport workers unions since the end of 2010 till the start of 2012. It started off with Unions and Qantas bargaining to start new enterprise agreements, Unions demanding for further improvements in working conditions and better wages.
