Immigration is the act of coming to live permanently in a foreign country. There are many reasons why people immigrate such as education, high standard of living, financially secured future, and political reasons. Many immigrants usually choose to settle in Canada, mainly in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. There are two main factors relating to immigration; pull and push factors. Push factors are the reason why people leave an area. Pull factors are the reasons why people move to a particular area. Visiting a country does not make you an immigrant, living permanently somewhere other than a person’s homeland makes you an immigrant. This can lead to physical and mental health issues caused by a decline of social factors of health; specific reasons such as employment, and social support. The unemployment rate for immigrants is 17 percent. Immigrants that have a job, they earn 63 cents for every dollar a Canadian born residents makes. These discrepancies are not caused by education. Access alliance multicultural health and community services stated that 43 percent of all newcomers to Canada have university degrees compared to 32.5 percent of Canadian born citizens. One factor that elucidates these discrepancies is discrimination against these groups in the employment area. The main concern is the system itself that discriminates against immigrants to Canada. Many immigrants that have qualification, degrees, and work experience are rejected. Employment inequality can lead to income inequality, and that has an impact on the health of immigrants. Newly immigrants often end up working for minimum wage jobs in order to take care of their families, since their qualifications are not being recognized, and these jobs tend to not be the safest or healthiest. Many of these groups end up working at factories which exposes them dangerous chemicals and working conditions (Batth). Discrimination relating to nationality and ethnicity affects job applicants. When employers make decisions about who to consider for a position, recognizable features on applicants resumes may act as indicators for unknown information. For example, employers may make assumptions about an applicant’s language skills because of the individual’s country of education, work experience, or even the name. Employers may also be inclined to discriminate based on prejudices and previous experiences with people from certain countries or ethnicities. Many skilled immigrants struggle in the labor market. Policy issue is a matter that should also be resolved as the others (Oreopoulos). In conclusion, discrimination towards immigrants is still very much perceptible in today’s society. This was examined through different factors such as employment concern, racial dispute, and policy issue. There are many more aspects as to how discrimination is still visible in modern day.
