In countries all around the world, Canada is seen as a welcoming land where one can emigrate and experience all kinds of opportunities while still retaining their traditional heritage. In theory, this is a brilliant concept, but much harder to put into practice. Immigrating families try to adapt to their surroundings, but when the culture is so different, trying to feel accepted and at home means sacrificing some of the norms they grew up with. As can be seen in much of today's literature, it is often impossible to strike a balance between the culture we live in and the culture we grew up in. Take the case of the mother in Taien Ng's short story Shun-Wai. She maintains that she is Chinese, even to the point of accusing her daughter of being like a "gwua-mui"a white girlwhenever she disagrees with her. This behavior is hypocritical since the mother has been acting more like a Christian Canadian than a Chinese woman since her arrival in Canada.…

The beginning of the Chinese immigration can date back to 1858, around the time of the British Columbia gold rush. The number of Chinese immigrates increased during the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway (1881-1885), when they were brought here as cheap laborers. However, instead of showing gratitude toward these people, the Canadian government set out harsh rules in order to “reserve” a “white man’s country” (Prime Minister R.B.Bennett, 1907).…

One of the major aspects of being a Canadian citizen is to be entitled to your freedom. Therefore, I would like to explain to you the right to practice any religion you support or no religion at all. To clarify, freedom of religion is the manner in your personal life where you are free to practice any religion you like. You are welcome to choose if you want to be a Christian, Muslim, Buddhist Hindu or no religion at all you are free to do so. Having the opportunity to choose whether to believe in a religion or not is important to gain the respect we have towards other people. As long as we do not abuse the valid laws which protect the rights and freedoms of others, we are able to live peacefully. Our Canadian government is a great supporter of people's religions due to the fact that there are no state-sponsored religions. They are not allowed to prefer some religious beliefs or groups over others. As a result, the Canadian government is open towards all the religions and do not discriminate their choices. Regardless of what you believe or practice, protecting freedom of religion is a critical part of ensuring that all people are treated with dignity and respect.…
Although this did not completely block Asian immigration it did make it fairly difficult for those of Chinese origin to migrate to Canada. In contrast, 1906 was the year, Frank Oliver a Liberal MP took a step towards defining immigration laws as he defined an immigrant. This resulted in a flood of immigrants to lesser habited parts of the country such as the Canadian West, this added to the ethnic diversity of the nation due to the fact that now all Canadians weren’t only English or French. It also boosted the economy, and by 1910 over 50% of Canadians were living urban lifestyles.…

Not only were they the only race that had to pay the tax many white Canadians were hostile towards the chinese saying that they were “undesirable” citizens (12). In conclusion, the citizens of Canada have been very hostile towards the Chinese making them pay extreme taxes, giving them impossible jobs and discriminating…
The genes-culture interaction increases the probability that while these differences originally were prominent, there is a chance that they will decrease as integration continues. Canada is known internationally as a multicultural country, one where people of different races, ethnicities and religions can come and live together, and more, be accepted. The policy of Official Multiculturalism allows for the new immigrant to Canada to feel welcome while gradually working, or not working towards…

How many immigrants should Canada be accepting; more, the same or fewer? Many people would say the intake should be less, others would say more, rarely will anyone agree that it should remain the same. The article, “Immigration Watch Canada” depicts the statistics of the immigrant intake in Canada throughout the years and the serious impact it has on Canadian citizens daily lives. Another article, “Why Canada Needs Immigrants” entails the need for immigrants, for the fertility rate is low and consequently the need for skilled workers is high.…
"The People of Canada have worked hard to build a country that opens its doors to include all, regardless of their differences; a country that respects all, regardless of their differences; a country that demands equality for all, regardless of their differences." (Paul Martin). Immigration started in the mid 1700s and is still continuing today. It plays an important role in developing Canada's economy, as well as shaping the nation into a multicultural nation. Immigration has become a significant role in building Canada's economy, by providing continuous growth in the labour force, constructing a strong economy, and becoming a diverse nation.…
