Pros And Cons Of Bedside Shift Report
Kari Sand-Jecklin and Jay Sherman, (2014) have stated that their study had been conducted for quantifying the quantitative outcomes of a practice change to blended form a nursing report. In this regard, several advantages of bedside nursing shift report have been identified in the literature. But the published studies failed to adequately quantify the outcomes related with this process change as these studies had either unreported or small sample sizes or were not tested for statistical significance. The method used in the study was that several medical surgical units from a large university hospital implemented a blend of recorded as well as bedside nursing report. The outcomes that would monitor included the satisfaction of the patients and nurses, patient falls medication errors and nursing overtime. This study also gave some indication from the nurses and the patients regarding the fact that bedside reports were not consistently implemented in all the cases. Therefore, the study concluded that there are many positive outcomes regarding the implementation of a blended bedside shift report better the same time it also has some drawbacks. The attitude of the nurses regarding the report at final data collection was more positive than it was at the beginning of post-implementation data collection. If it is properly implemented, the bedside nursing report can be helpful in improving the patient and nurse satisfaction and also improving the patient safety outcomes.
