Prerequisites For Physical Therapy
I am an Exercise Science major and I have been taking the prerequisites for Physical Therapy programs. Included in those are a lot of health related classes such as anatomy and nutrition. These classes all intertwine in a lot of ways and have really helped me make this class easier since I've already heard a lot of the terminology. It makes me wish I had only taken it sooner because it probably would've made those classes a lot easier. Before I took most of these classes I shadowed at a couple of rehabilitation clinics and found myself wondering what they were talking about. They used words and abbreviations I had never heard before and I would just try to figure out what they were saying. I plan to do more shadowing and get a job as a rehab

6102013 Monday 8:00pm Physical Therapist Assistant Program ESSAY 1. What do you believe a physical therapist would do on a daily basis? As a Physical Therapist Assistant, I believe I will be gaining complete handson experience everyday and be kept up with multiple aspects of my job field most of which includes hospital work, childcare, sports training and lastly, elderly care. To be able to interact and converse smoothly would be something crucial especially when being exposed to so many people who have been injured or distressed. I’m convinced the work effort put into the field of study will be fairly intense prior to becoming a PTA. I also know that PTA is growing popular in the demand of jobs. As far as home care goes, I believe that there’ll be a lot of travelling and paperwork involved day to day because of the hands on experience with athome patients and health notes being taken for patients. 2. Why are you interested in pursuing a career as a Physical Therapist Assistant? What appeals to me the most, is the experience, interaction, and care for new people all the time. I like that there will be a completion of an Associate of Science Degree after all hours and courses being finished. There is a yearly income of $40,000 for entrylevel college PTA graduates, the yearly income ranges from a wide variety of pay from $40,000 to well above $85,000 for the most experienced PTA. I also like that there is an immediate chance of me getting hired as an intern shooting straight out of college. Above all, the thing that sets this particular career apart from others is being able to choose whether the job is fast paced or slow paced depending on the branch that suits me best. I’m hoping to pursue and complete all of the above mentioned. 3. What are your experiences with Physical Therapy I’ve had a good amount of situations involving the work of Physical Therapy. My main experiences with physical therapy are being cared for after hyperextending my MCL during football…

This semester I am taking five other courses besides this one. One of my more interesting classes is Kinesiology 220, otherwise known as Introduction to Athletic Injuries. This class focuses on injury in sport and how to deal with it as an athlete, athletic trainer, coach, or physical therapist. We learn all about how injuries are onset, whether it be acute (a direct impact or action resulting in injury), or chronic (an ongoing action that slowly wears down a part of the body resulting in injury). We also discuss what types of injuries occur more in certain sports, or even because of what gender you are. For example, women are more prone to knee injuries such as ACL tears than men are. Studies have been done and while there is no set reason…

Bloom’s Taxonomy of Education is an in-depth study of how people learn and how educators can better teach. Health Ed. has been really easy because we have pretty much covered most of that units, even the CPR unit. I have also used what I have learned in this class outside of school mostly with my family because when they would not know what something means I would always be able to tell them what it means. I have also noticed that I understand what my doctors and more specifically what orthodontist is saying during my appointments. I will use what I have learned in this class to my advantage while in college and nursing school. If I could go back in time I would not want to change anything but I would tell my 9th grade self to relax and that I made the right choice, if not one of the best choices so far. I think five years after graduating from Wheeling I will be in the process of getting my registered nursing degree and after ten years I see myself having a nursing job and maybe working as a neonatal nurse if possible by then. In ten years a lot will be different about me but I see myself being in a good place. I really enjoyed being in this program and I am going to miss it, but I am excited that I am moving to CNA next…

In the 2002 APTA Presidential Address, Mr. Massey made the point that direct access was not a new issue in physical therapy (Massey, 2002). In fact, by 2002 “the battle” for direct access had already been going on for two decades (Massey, 2002). It was a battle that was fought state by state. Three decades later, the US Virgin Islands, the District of Columbia, and all 50 states allow direct access of physical therapy services as of January 1, 2015 (Direct Access at the State Level, 2015). Direct access removed state laws requiring referral or prescription from a physician for patients to access physical therapy services from licensed physical therapists. For example, if an individual were to sprain their ankle while playing recreational…

While the word `professionalism' usually refers simply to the quality of being professional, in truth it does not describe a single quality, but rather encompasses many different attributes that together define what a professional is. Throughout my experiences in various physical therapy settings, I was fortunate enough to observe therapists who have not only served as my role models, but have also taught me what professionalism really means. Not only excelling in their duties as physical therapists, every person I've been lucky enough to work with has been kind, accountable, and extremely committed, all of which are traits I have tried to emulate in my work as a volunteer and physical therapy technician. While I observed various displays of professionalism in different physical therapy…

During the first year post graduation I need to take and pass my licensure exam in July. After I pass my licensure exam I hope to find a full time, part-time or PRN job at an acute care or a long term care facility. During this time I am going to be adjusting to my first job as a PTA, so I am not going to get any extra certifications at this time. It is going to be important for me to continue researching and learning about different types of diagnosis and patients I may have to treat so I am well prepared to give these patients the best PT experience possible. In order to do this, I will do research on patient with diagnosis I am unsure of. I would also like to continue to expand my knowledge of therapeutic exercises. In order to do this I will continue to research exercises online and on HEP to go, as well as learn from other PT and PTA’s I work with. During this time I would like to find a class on manual therapy to help me improve my manual therapy skills. To find a manual therapy class I will get online and look for courses, which there is some information online offered by Myofascial release treatment centers and seminars. I will just need to see if PTAs are…

I loved and understood everything up until the Medisoft part of the class. At the time my Instructor used an overhead projector with pictures and diagrams of what the Medisoft look like and the functions. After our Instructor showed us diagrams with verbal information about the functions of Medisoft we were given a quiz at the end of the class in which I didn’t do so well because I didn’t take in all the information given. I knew what she was saying but I just wasn’t able to put into mind logically unless I was actually in the program doing it step by step while the Instructor was showing the diagrams of Medisoft. Since it was just a quiz for knowledge it wasn’t graded which was a relief for me. After class I asked my Instructor if we will have actual hands on practice with Medisoft and she said that we will in a week. I had expressed to her that I was having trouble understanding Medisoft because I’m the type that likes to try if I can and not just by reflective observation that I’m weak on. Eventually we got into the real Medisoft part of the program and I did pass the real test with an A. This class had a good outcome for me because I graduated and most of all enjoyed every moment of it because I learned to never be shy to ask questions and always let the Instructor know of my difficulty in learning so I can improve my…

Since I was a child, I knew I had a strong interest in becoming something in the medical field. Anatomy has always been a very important factor to have in my life because of all the things I’ve witnessed growing up in a place where there was no one educated enough to help out. Thus, I took the Anatomy and Physiology course provided at my school. Taking this class informed me of the structure and functions of the body parts in the human system such as the Immune and Digestive system, which can affect pregnant women. Taking this course along with other science classes made me realize that I want to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree and earn my medical degree in order to become an OB/GYN. This course also helped me better understand what my body needs…

The most significant aspect related to health care management that I would like to gain by taking this class is how to be better with time management. I am good at organizing, planning, controlling and leading for the most part. When it comes to time management, I never seem to have enough hours in a day. I have a habit of trying to get everything done at one time instead of pacing myself accordingly. I hope to learn how to manage my time better throughout this class to help me become a stronger and more efficient leader for the future. I would also like…
