Precious's Theory Of Abuse
Precious’s self-concept is everything but positive. She has a very low self-esteem, and she struggles with body image. She thinks that she is ugly, and isn’t accepted by anyone. She always dreams of being a white skinny girl with long blonde hair. She also experienced guilt for being mean to the little girl who wanted her attention. Precious also had difficulty trusting her mother, because she did not believe that her mother was capable of changing for the better. She knew that living with her mother was a harmful environment for herself and her children. Also, Precious being a victim of physical abuse, she is highly at risk of becoming an abusive parent as well.

According to Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems view, Precious has a microsystem consisting of her tormenting and abusive parents, a broken school system, and a low income neighborhood riddled with drugs and crime (Oswalt, 2008). Precious’s exosystem consists of her mother’s anger towards her because she views the father as choosing Precious sexually over her which makes her bitter and insecure. This negatively affects Precious because it serves as fuel for her mother’s severe physical and emotional abuse such as being forced to over eat. The macro system that surrounds Precious is exhibited by unruly students, distractions, and poor resources in the classroom. Precious is overlooked and somehow reaches 9th grade but is completely illiterate.…

On page 174, Rosie’s mother Lydia stated, “How dare you! You think he would do that to you? You think he would pick you, when you’re the ugliest? He can pick any of your sisters who are ways prettier than you! Huh? Fucking liar!” I was shocked by Lydia. How come can she say such words to a twelve years old girl? At that time, Rosie was just a little girl who needs to take care of carefully. Whereas, Lydia as her mother, did not take any responsibilities, and always abused her. Now, when her daughter was harassed, she never comforted Rosie, and even hurt Rosie by abusing her ugly. That was not a wise behavior for a mother. On page 157, Rosie stated, “Refusing defeat, I started to work for the first time, doing yard work, cleaning out garages,…

    Precious Film Analysis

She is often taunted and bullied in the streets by thugs and then gets home to be treated as sub-human. But she has conditioned herself to be dehumanized. As much as she is determined to get out and move forward, her mother is equally determined to keep her down. After all, if she allows Precious to leave, her welfare checks will stop. She is not interested in moving from the front of the television set. As far as Mary’s concerned, Precious is not human and she definitely does not see her as her daughter. She’s only good for the role of her domestic. Precious expects to hear insults slurred at her, she expects to have trash hurled at her or dumped on her by her mother, Mary and the rest of the world. She accepts it all with numbness and nonchalance. The film adopts the personality of the protagonist who narrates the story and allows us to glimpse into her coping mechanism of wishful escape fantasies. Deep at the heart of “Precious” lies a truly poignant and inspirational story, which is no doubt, handled with great care and sincerity. “Precious” could easily be overstated, sentimental or rife with clichés, but rather it is loaded with surprises that invoke gasps of horror at times and tears of joy at other times. She is ashamed, humiliated and disgusted at herself but she escapes into her fantasy dream world where we hear voiceovers and flashing lights as everyone clamors for a glimpse of her on the red carpet, where her gorgeous Romeo awaits her with open…

Maybe I never find no love, nobody. At least when I look at the girls I see them and when they look they see ME, not what I looks like. But it seems like boyz just see what you looks like. (Sapphire, 1996, pg. 95). We see Precious begin to question gender, sexuality, her worth. All of which were wrongly defined to her at a young age. We see her begin her journey and push through all her struggles in order to feel alive and connected to herself by herself. She beings to use characters introduced to her through literature to work through the situations she has been put through in her life. It is here that we see education shape her perception and we see her tap into her inner power and…

She used mostly concrete, observable characteristics. The textbook indicates that children do not talk about self worth until age 8, but that their behavior may indicate self-esteem. I feel that Suzy has developed self-esteem and demonstrates self-esteem related issues already with regards to her peer group. A young child's self concept extends to what makes her happy or sad. Social psychologists such as Jean Piaget believe that a child’s concept of self evolves as he gets older. The ability to reason and understand morals, or to differentiate right from wrong, grows as he understands more fully that he is a separate individual from his parents and the rest of the world. Parents can aid in their children's moral development by engaging in age-appropriate activities with their children and basing moral teachings on their children's ability to understand. Preoperational children often have relatively high self-esteem because early self-concepts are based on easily defined and observed variables, and because many young children are given lots of encouragement. Young children are also generally optimistic that they have the ability to learn a new skill, succeed, and finish a task if they keep trying. Self-esteem comes from several sources, such as school ability, athletic ability, friendships, relationships with caregivers, and other helping and playing…

There are no signs of physical abuse from his parents. His parents’ parenting style is permissive and show little or no signs of control of his behavior. Mary and Joseph have been nurturing to John because of his witness of his grandparent’s accident. Mary stated in the first few visits they use the time out method for John and it rarely works because John becomes argumentative. According to Broderick (2015), permissive parents exercise less behavior control by putting few maturity demands on their children especially when they display anger and aggressive behavior.…

Gross is a valid source because she has a Ph.D. in Library and Information Science from the University of California, Los Angeles. Gross has over twenty references that are used in her article.
