Pirates of the Caribbean VS. Elein Kleine Nachtmusik
The Pirates of the Caribbean theme song was written by Hans Zimmer and is widely known by most people, similarly to Mozart’s Elein kleine Nachtmusik. Pirates of the Caribbean is a very well-produced movie, therefore it has a very complex theme song. Even though Mozart has many instruments and different variety of music characteristics, he is able to balance different characteristics. Their characteristics range from their meter, melody, rhythm, harmony, texture, and the instruments used in each song.
To start off, I will describe Mozart’s song into his four movements. In the first movement of Mozart’s song is in sonata-allegro form. The song opens up in an ascending rocket theme, which is …show more content…
One screams as a battle cry while the other sings more like a love song. Pirates of the Caribbean is orchestrated for a full orchestra and uses the brass and strings aggressively. Mozart’s piece, translated to “A Little Night Music” is usually played by a chamber orchestra of fewer than 20 people. The movie theme does not have a coda while Mozart’s piece does. In fact the structures are entirely different. Night Music has different movements all serving different purposes. Allegro is upbeat and the second movement is slower and more like a love song. In Pirates of the Caribbean, there are in fact different “moods.” Since it is a Suite, similar to Carmen by Bizet, it consists of small parts of songs that are showcased throughout the movie. Therefore the different moods are actually the different songs from the movie. Unlike Mozart however, Zimmer does not separate them into different movements. The other, Elein Kleine Nachtmusik by Mozart, serves as a piece to serve as a serenade or background music at a social gathering or a gentle piece at a concert. As is fairly obvious, the sizeable difference in purpose creates an equally large difference in how the pieces come out. The Pirates of the Caribbean is an aggressive piece with large and epic crescendos while Mozart’s piece is a mild piece written in the normal Classical form. While some similarities such as the selection of instruments is clear, differences such as the number of said instruments is still clearer. In the end, they are both beautiful pieces. They are written in different styles, from different periods, for different purposes and the number of their differences are much greater than their
