Driving is a privilege, and in many cases this privilege is abused. Some people don’t take driving seriously and this often results in terrible accidents. Other innocent people sadly become victims of this carelessness. The U.S banned several acts that result in accidents such as drinking under the influence. Driving while under the influence was banned because it affects the drivers’ concentration. Doesn’t texting while driving do the same thing? When a driver is texting his/her focus is not on the road and at any moment the driver may lose control of their vehicle. Texting while driving should be banned in every state because it’s a dangerous act; this ban will decrease the amount of accidents caused by this act, and it will provide safety for fellow drivers.

Texting while driving is severely dangerous on the road while operating a vehicle. Texting while driving interrupts it cognitively as you think about the texting message instead of on the road. It interrupts it manually as your fingers type the message back to another person. It interrupts it visually as you look down at your phone. All of these are reasons why texting while driving should be illegal in every state. The government has started to realize that texting while driving is starting to become a nationwide problem. Few studies have investigated whether a difference exists between the two laws which intend to eradicate drinking and driving and texting while driving. All fifty states have a per se law setting the limit of alcohol to .08 Blood Alcohol Content for drinking and driving. This law means any blood alcohol at or above .08 is in fact a crime while operating a vehicle. As of today, 40 states have a texting ban on all drivers (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 2012). Even with a national push to ban texting while driving, Congress has not passed any acts making adopting a ban beneficial to a state such as the way congress praised the .08 per se law for drinking and driving. According to the National Highway Administration, there were 32,885 deaths in motor vehicle collisions in 2010 (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2010). Distracted driving provided 5,474 of those fatalities. Cell phone use was fully known to have caused 995 of the distracted driver deaths, but that number could be greater due to officers having a hard time determining whether a cell phone undoubtedly contributed to more of the fatal collision. Alternatively,…

It can be hard to manage two things at a time. This new law can teach drivers about time management, and how to use their time wisely. Drivers will learn that they need to make time in their schedules to contact other people. Having to multitask means that the person did not manage enough time out of their day to use their cellphone. To add on to the arguments of missing important messages and being able to multitask, those not in favor of the new law assert the idea that it goes against the right to use their phones. Although, this is the complete opposite. This law teaches about the fair use of property by letting others know when to use it. If someone broke the law, their phone may be confiscated. This is to prevent any additional trouble caused by this item. Having property such as a cellphone is a privilege, not a right. You are not required to own a cellphone as your own property. To conclude my argument, cellphone use should be banned while driving. This law will prevent accidents, help manage time and teach about the correct time to use certain items. There is a time and a place for everything. Driving requires all of your focus, whether you just got your license, or have been…

However, the Governor’s Highway Safety Association understands that there are dangers involved with texting behind the wheel, but doesn’t agree with a ban because they think it would be too hard to enforce. “Highway safety laws are only effective if they can be enforced, and if the public believe they will be fined for not obeying. To this day, that has been the case with other cell phone restrictions,” said Vernon Betkey, the highway safety chairman (“Tests reveal dangers of texting while…

Furthermore, when people text and drive, they are not only breaking the law, but that person is putting other people in danger. If people were to get into an accident and kill somebody, that person would have that guilt for the rest of their life. Even though they did not mean to kill somebody, it still happened. If a person is caught while texting and driving, they could get sent to jail for a year and a 10,000 dollar fine (Allen). Again, this is still no different than any other accident.…

Many states have banned the use of hand-held devices while driving. Knowing about all the people that have been killed in accidents involving cell phones, I one-hundred percent agree with this law. Driving takes an extreme amount of concentration, due to the many things that could happen on the road.
