The ban took effect on December 30, 2009. In 2009, 11 percent of all drivers were on the road holding an electric device (U.S Congress NTS). The National Transportation Safety Board reports that in 2008 almost 6,000 people died from crashes that resulted from distracted driving. Senator Klobuchar on the committee and senators Menendez, Landrieu, and Hagen together introduced the Alert Drivers Act, which would say that states pass laws banning texting while driving. Though more and more states are passing texting bans, it remains the case that fewer than half the states have banned the practice as of today (U.S. Congress). AAA foundation for Traffic Safety reports that 67 percent of drivers admitted to talking on their cell phone while driving behind the wheel, and 21 percent of drivers indicated they have read or sent a text or email message, a number that rose to 40 percent for those drivers under the age of 35. Everyone knows that banning texting while driving won’t stop every texter on the road, just like outlawing drinking while driving hasn’t stopped people from getting behind the wheel after having a few drinks. Little did we know, statistics show it is more dangerous to text while you drive than to drive drunk. It sounds that it is not right, but research shows it is true. They owe it to the American people to do everything they can to promote safe driving. All they have to do is pass a ban on texting behind the wheel. Studies noted that driver distraction may be a major cause of road traffic crashes. Distractions can be defined as the diversion of attention away from activities critical for safe driving, toward a competing activity, which may result in insufficient or no attention to these critical activities.
