Why College Football Players Should Be Paid

College athletes deal with busy school schedules and practice schedules all throughout their week, so why shouldn't they be paid for their time dedicated to sports? Since the beginning of college football, college athletes have never been paid for their efforts in sports. Sure they have received scholarships, but young students that don’t have much money can't always balance school, practice, and a job. College football players should be paid to help them pay for their everyday needs, give them the money they played hard to earn, and to eliminate recruiting and secret payments.

Playing a college football is like a full time job, except for no financial benefits. For example, a college football player is always doing something seven days a week for the team, whether it's practice, watching film, running, or lifting weights. With an intense schedule like this, they are left with no time for a job. And without a job, it is hard to pay for your everyday needs. They also have little time to study, and what little time they do have they are too tired to study effectively.

When a college football team wins, it is a big deal whether you know it or not. The players play real hard to earn that win. Even if the team doesn’t get a win I still think they should get paid. What if a player gets hurt and can’t ever play again? Their scholarship disappears and they have to start paying tuition. If they don’t have enough money then they have to leave the college, which is a huge liability and risk for the players.

Now more than ever college players are excepting bribes to NFL teams. Recruiters go around and talk to college football players and bribe them with things such as cash and other things. If a college football player gets caught excepting these bribes, they will be suspended or kicked off the team. If the player was getting paid, there would be less

In recent years the topic of college football players being paid has been widely discussed, but in reality the fact that this is even a discussion is just ridiculous. College football isn't a job, it is an extracurricular activity students can take part in while in college. Behind this common idea is college football players already are being seen as more privileged and that is not fair to other students and paying college football players will increase that perception. Also if the college football players were paid there must be an organized plan in terms of the pay structure it would it be fairly determined in terms of how to pay the football players and seeing if certain players get paid more than others. Most importantly is the immaturity…

Being an athlete in college means you contribute about 40 hours to your sport. They have a full time college schedule with studying, mandatory classes, and let’s not forget practice. According to an article, “If the average NCAA college football player in division one spends over 40 hours a week on their game, then they are working the same amount as those in full time employment do”(Listland 1). $53.4 Million the combined salary of the top 15 paid coaches in division 1 college football, $0 the combined salary of all student-athletes. Over the past few decades, college athletics have gained popularity across the United States. Whether it is football, basketball, or baseball, ever since the turn of the century, intercollegiate sports have brought in a surplus of revenue to their respective Universities. A recent study found that the University of Texas’ Athletic Program had the highest revenue of any other University at a little over $120 million. Yet with this large sum of money, NO college athletes are legally compensated for their work. According to NCAA rules, “You are not eligible for participation in a sport if you have ever: Taken pay or the promise of pay, for competing in that sport”. While it may seem odd and unjust to pay college athletes, the reality is that compensation of such athletes is a necessity not only to keep competition at a steady level in college athletics, but also to encourage students to graduate and get their college degrees.…
