Personal Statement Of Purpose: A Career As A Roller Coaster
Everybody loves a roller coaster, even if they can scare us to death. However, not many people study and analyze roller coasters. Fortunately, I am one of those people. When I heard about The Cornell Theme Park Engineering Group, I’ll admit my heart started to jump. Finally, this was my chance to share my crazy roller coaster ideas I had been conjuring up with like minded people. Things as crazy as a four-dimensional gyroscopic megacoaster could be considered outside of the sketches of my mind. However, there is a lot more to a roller coaster than a train and a lot of twisty track. Every aspect of a ride, right down to the very bolts holding a seat together, has to be meticulously designed to ensure maximum safety, comfort, and thrill. Enter, …show more content…
Whether it be exploring science through school, clever little home experiments, or through personal research, science has always played a large part in my life. I have always been fascinated with how things work, and the mechanical and scientific principles behind the everyday objects we interact with. Something as simple as a stapler can be captivating, as I try to pin down the manufacturing process that could create hundreds of thousands of staplers. I relish in problem solving and coming up with intricate solutions to complex problems. Crazy things like building a 30 step Rube Goldberg contraption in my basement with three friends for a science and engineering competition are completely normal to an engineer like me. Even looking beyond engineering provides me with an opportunity to explore just how to improve and better the world that we live in. However, besides my passion for science, I also have taken an interest in the arts. I am highly involved with both the school choir and the theatre. As I delve deeper into the world of science and math, music and the arts serve as my outlet to the creative world and provides me with another community to expand my …show more content…
A single man can’t build a megacoaster. Cornell Engineering provides the opportunity for me to attain my goals, and to make my aspirations a reality. One thing about Cornell Engineering that excites me is the flexibility provided to tailor my education to exactly what I wish it to be. If I want to blend mechanical engineering with structural engineering, architecture, and applied economics to create a theme park engineering education, I can do that! That is incredibly exciting, as it allows me to design my experience at Cornell to help me achieve my goals. I’m not naive, roller coaster design jobs are at best, scarce. However, I am confident that a blended Cornell Engineering Education can give me an edge. If, by chance, roller coaster design doesn’t work out, I know that my Cornell education can be applied to many other fields. Perhaps the most valuable aspect of a Cornell Engineering education is the experience I can gain by surrounding myself with a community of peers and professors who I know are as excited and interested in learning as I am. Cornell engineering will give me the connections and the experience I need to reach my

This statement is important to me because I have always found that I am at my best when I am helping people, whether its helping people at my job or at the grocery store. Physical therapy involves treatment through physical means for people disabled by illness, accident, or congenital handicap. It seeks to improve mobility, relieve pain, or minimize permanent physical disabilities (Occupational Outlook Handbook). The physical therapy career field interests me for many reasons. It revolves solely around the human body, which is a fascinating topic to learn about. This area of expertise is flexible and rewarding. There are many specialty areas to choose your career from; some of these include orthopedic, geriatric, neurological, and pediatric. As well as flexible concentrations, physical therapy can have flexible work environments. These jobs can be conducted in many types of facilities such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, private offices, rehabilitation clinics, assisted living facilities, educational institutions, sports centers, and home health agencies (Occupational Outlook Handbook). The work environment and broad range of specializations are major factors in my choice of this career path.…

After Graduate School, I hope to have my PhD in psychology or my doctorate in psychiatry. I would like to start out working in jails, talking to criminals and analyzing their brains versus the brain of an average adult to study how the brain reacts with criminal activity and why they do and feel what they do. I have heard that a person can not do that type of work for very long because it is emotionally tasking so after that, I would like to open my own counseling practice up. I would do either marriage and family therapy or focus on teenage depression. Eventually, I would like to retire into school psychology or become a psychology teacher. Also, if I ever have enough money, I will buy a house devoted to taking in stray animals…

Waking up in the middle of the night coughing and gasping for air occurred on a regular basis for me as a child. I slept with an inhaler and a nebulizer next to my bed in the event of the next attack. My asthma attacks were frightening for my parents and especially for me as I felt as if I was on the verge of death whenever I suddenly could not breathe. Although I was always in and out of emergency rooms and doctor visits at a young age, having tried everything from nebulizer treatments to bronchodilators, I was always comforted by the doctors and nurses who always took the time to explain and alleviate any concerns and anxiety I had. Seeing their devotion to their profession and for patient care has motivated me to pursue graduate study in the field of nursing to invest my future to coordinate and implement quality healthcare for others.…

My professional goal is to become a teacher with hard work and dedication I know I can reach my lifetime goal. For my extra-curricular activities, I have attended the Head Start at Brookhaven Community College where I have volunteered over thirty hours in a semester to get myself prepared for the profession. Going to the local Head Start gave me the opportunity to see if this is really what I want to do for many years. I put myself in a position where I actually enjoyed what I was doing, I had patience which a lot of people don’t have to teach younger kids. I worked with three to five years old, I had to show them I was the leader. In my four years of High School, I have taken my time out to be a leader in my school. I was vice-president freshman…

I have performed in New York City, the Georgia Dome, Disney World, and Lucas Oil Stadium. I’ve been given the opportunity to work with distinguished individuals from around the country and invited to participate in select ensembles. But it has given me so much more than musical experiences. The discipline required to be a musician has weaved its way into many aspects of my academic life as well, creating a more focused and driven person who has continued to succeed in the rigorous academics I’ve been challenged with. I have also developed a creative mindset, that at times, seems uncontrollable. Whether it be creating videos, finding ways to incorporate engineering into an English project, or writing my next original percussion ensemble piece, it seems the applications for my creativity have become…

As a humans we all have to experience certain situations in life, in order to figure out what we like and dislike. I can honestly say I’ve had my fair share of situations. I started working at Samsung call center as a full time employee. The job had excellent benefits, and room for growth and advancement. While I was working there I thought it was what I wanted, but as time progressed I realized it may not be for me. I had been out of school for 2 years when I accepted this job, so I wasn’t quite sure as to what career path I wanted to take. My decision at the time was to work full time and remain productive with that. Sometime you have to make a few changes within in yourself in order to grow as a person. Just because a certain job makes a decent amount of money doesn’t necessarily mean it is suitable for you.…

I wasn’t terribly sure what I wanted to do with my life, nor did I have any idea how to get where I thought I wanted to be. My relative lack of passion wasn’t seen as a deterrent in my affluent Texas town, though, as it was a place where nearly all high school students went on to college—it was the only option we really considered or that was presented to us by our families, teachers, and counselors as a post-graduation plan. So I began the requisite search by looking first at nontraditional college environments, for while I had done reasonably well at my large and impersonal public high school, nor had I flourished either. It seemed to me that if I was going to spend the next four years of my life in school, I might as well try a different tactic than the one that had allowed me to coast rather unremarkably through high school.…
