Personal Narrative: Science Bridge Program
This summer I went Princess Anne, Maryland for a six-week to a science bridge program and this was my first time ever being away from my parents and this was difficult because I depend so much on my parents and being that they were not there was going to be challenging. When I applied for the program I had high expectations that it would be a great experience for me and that I would learn new information about my major and also have the chance to meet new friends all while being away from home. For me being so far from home was such a challenge being that Usually I with either my parents or brothers, so when I was away from my family I was home sick while I was there. I would call my family several times throughout the day while I was away from home. I was not able to enjoy myself while I was in Maryland because I could only reflect about being back with my family. I did not like my experience so much that would find simple issues to be upset about, such as the music played on the vans or how fast they would drive the vans going to field trips. The field trips that we went on were interesting because I learned about my major and what …show more content…
My cousin, Kim picked me up one weekend and took me to Philadelphia for the weekend. While I was in Philadelphia we went to museums and I tried an authentic Philly cheese steak. I was overwhelmed with excitement that my cousin came to pick me for the weekend that it was my favorite part of my six weeks. Although the program was supposed to be a glimpse of what college is going be like in the fall, that the experience was a terrible example of what college would be like. I learned what people I want to be around and what people I do not while I was in Maryland. Although this is not the type of program that I want to do in the future however, I learned that I am capable of making decisions without the help of my

“I attract a crowd, not because I’m an extrovert, or I’m over the top, or I’m oozing with charisma. It’s because I care.” (Gary Vaynerchuk). This quote closely resembles one of the qualities of a liberally educated person, “They nurture and empower the people around them.” One excellent example of this is the sense of community at Mount Saint Charles Academy.…

I’ve lived in the same neighborhood for as long as I can remember. I’ve gone to school with the same peers. I’ve been blessed enough to not have dealt with much turmoil in my life. I live with my supporting mother who has always been around to drop everything she’s doing to come to my aid. With all this in mind, you could come to the conclusion that I have not had to deal with a lot of change in my life nor have I ever welcomed it. So in my sophomore year when I was invited to participate in a summer program which entailed me leaving home for six weeks, me nor my mother were excited about the opportunity. I did not know that the program, called the Emory Pipeline Collaborative Program, would completely change my outlook on life and my identity…

There is plenty of milestones in my academic career, but the most prestigious is applying what I learned in AP Chemistry to the AP Exam and passing with a four. Although it may not seem as much on the surface, it’s meaningful. This proved all my hard work persevering through AP Chemistry paid off. This class consisted of laboratory experiments which have sparked my interest in chemistry. I enjoyed much of the labs and loved furthering my knowledge of chemistry. I knew then I wanted to study chemistry but being a chemist doesn’t fit my aspirations, I wanted to apply theories not create them. My future goals have been influenced by my volunteer work with Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful. I’ve helped with christmas tree recyclings and park clean…

On June 12, 2006, I was ready to board my flight at San Diego International airport, when I was given a once in a lifetime experience. As I began to board, the captain and first officer were greeting the passengers ahead of me. The line was moving very slowly; however, I eventually made it to the front. The captain and I began talking when all of a sudden he asked a very typical question, “What do I want to be when I grow up?” I responded, “I want to be a pilot” and for no apparent reason offered to take me into the cockpit. Inside the cockpit, the captain continued to talk about the plane while pointing to instruments such as altimeter and vertical speed indicator, when I suddenly asked him, “How did he become a pilot?” He responded by saying,…

This was the response I got after telling a patient, on a medical mission trip, that I understood it was difficult for her to buy fresh toothbrushes regularly. I learned the hard way never to tell someone that you understand their situation because everyone’s situation is unique to them. Based on my experiences, being humble does not mean sympathizing with other people’s struggles, but rather stands for being fully present while interacting with people with no motivation besides compassion.…

When I was sixteen, I attended to a pre-college summer program for three weeks. When I arrived, I had a dorm room, a roommate, and seventy-nine strangers to become acquainted with. We had all come for the same general reasons – we wanted to learn more, experience more, and become at least slightly prepared for what college might be like. We attended classes and learned about new topics, but…

The Early College was the push I needed to better myself as a student and as a person. In high school, I received stellar grades and test scores without trying. I never needed to study, and I did the bare minimum for a majority of my assignments. Occasionally, I would find an assignment that I loved and go way beyond the requirement. I was a teacher favorite, but I was disliked by other students because I was a bit of a show off with my intelligence. I never needed time management skills, so I never developed them. While I was received good grades, I did not improve any of my skills or abilities. This program helped me find my faults and make changes that have made a world of difference.…

The single most impactful experience in my life is attending Ventura Community College. Nothing has hurt me more. In high school I had taken AP and IB classes and had finished within the top ten percent of my class but I had no idea what I wanted to do. I applied to some schools that I considered to be mediocre so that I could continue swimming, but as the application deadlines ended and most of my friends were being accepted to places such as UCLA, UCSB, and even Harvard, I had realized that I wanted a greater challenge and possibly a greater reward. It was too late, I was going to community college.…

My father always told me that nothing worth having comes easy. I carry these words close to my heart and they have driven me to challenge myself through life, especially in my STEM career. My major in the science field has been similar to riding a roller-coaster, but I have learned to overcome most of the obstacles I have faced along the way. No matter what situation brought me down, I remained positive and tried to think of solutions rather than giving up. Finally, in the last few months, many of my peers would mention that I am the type of person who is able to withstand obstacles and recover quickly.…
