Personal Narrative: My First Soccer Coach
Soccer is a huge part of my life, and a big part of a soccer team is the coach. The coach must make an impact on their players in order to make the players better. The best coaches will stay with you forever even if they are not your coach anymore. When I was younger and throughout middle school I only had one soccer coach my entire life. The coach I had for my entire life was my father, so getting a brand new coach during my first year of high school was quite scary. I had always been extremely close to my coach, obviously because he was my father, and getting another one that I may not be close to made me nervous. My father knew how I played better that anyone, and he also knew my strengths and weaknesses. Dad had a straightforward view of …show more content…
He was a jokester who loved picking on people. He used to say to CJ, an older boy soccer player, “I guess your poofy hair helps with headers.” It was quite hilarious to listen to him pick on the older soccer players. He made everyone laugh which always lightened a serious mood. He was also quite sarcastic at times, so you had to learn when he was and when he wasn’t. Coach Yeargan also had his serious moments when it was time to get down to business, and it seemed like time stopped to pay attention to him. He demanded everyone to pay attention to him when the time came, but if you didn’t you paid the consequences by running rebel runs. He may seem hard on the outside, but once you get to know Coach Yeargan he seems like a giant teddy …show more content…
My sophomore and junior year of high school my father, Coach Shaw, became my coach again. To my surprise Coach Shaw kept me where Coach Yeargan had put me. My dad is really happy I played that one year with Coach Yeargan because of how much I grew. I love having my father as my coach, because he is my all-time favorite coach, but I sometimes miss having Coach Yeargan as my coach. My senior year of soccer is about to begin, and I am quite sure I will keep my same position. Coach Yeargan isn’t completely out of my life, because I still use all of his tips and tricks he shared with me. The mentality he gave me is the same one I still have. Every single game Coach Yeargan still critiques me and tells me ways to fix my game. He cheers me on when I make a goal, and sometimes picks on me by saying it was luck, which it usually is. His favorite thing to say is, “Oh another lucky goal. All you do is kick the ball and hope it goes in.” I am thankful not only to have Coach Shaw helping me, but I also have Coach Yeargan with me. Not many players have two coaches, so I am

It had been a long and tough game. The sun was beating down on us and we were all tired when all of a sudden the game’s time limit ran out. We were all tense because no one knew the score. The ref said that the game was tied. We all exhaled. We hadn't even realized we were holding our breaths. That meant we all had to do PKs (Penalty kicks) until one team won.…

It was a frigid, windy, Friday night in October. The only light was the bright and beaming illumination of the stadium lights projecting over the soccer field. The bleachers were full, it seemed as if the whole school was there, and as a freshman with anxiety, it made it hard to cope with the fact, that I was going to be a starter for the varsity soccer team.…

Later in my high school career, now bigger and stronger, I tried out for an elite summer softball team. My new coach was unlike any coach I had had before. He would scream in my face, and point out my flaws in front of the entire team. However, most importantly, he challenged me to grow as a person and to confront my biggest fear, which is failure. He pushed me to my limits, making me want to quit and wishing I had never played the game. Despite these challenges, I persevered and became mentally and physically…

It’s game day, and the first time in twenty-three years that we might be able to defeat out school rivals, Turpin. But something didn’t feel like it should, after all it was the biggest day our team’s season. We had immense confidence in ourselves, being the higher raked state team, we expected to win this game then make a large tournament run. Little did we know that the rest of our season relied heavily on this game. Winning or losing this game would not end our season physically, but would emotionally ruin us, ultimately ending our season. The game began with a pleasant, almost soothing blow of the whistle and ended with the blood-curtailing screech of the referee’s dagger, sending shivers down my spin. The roar of our crowd stopped and…

Over the course of these years my parents were always busy taking my teammates and I to games and practices. Although my father was the head coach, it was my mother who did majority of the transportation. She often had to reschedule her entire work and school schedule around my practices and games. The team mother was often what she was called. Often my little brother would tag along to games and practices. He would sometimes have the opportunity to practice with the older boys when he could, which in the long run allowed him to become an awesome player himself.…

Everything was so cool at first because I didn't realize anything that was happening because my excitement got the best of me. Then I stopped getting excited to go to practices. The old Coach did not even pay any attention to the new players. He did not try to teach them the game of soccer or even how to play. It just seemed he only payed all his attention to his returning players. Which, absolutely did not make any sense to me at all. Mainly, because since the fact that they already knew how to play. They had been playing since they were really young children. I felt like It would just make a lot more sense to work with the new players. So they can know how to play and understand the actually game of soccer more. But, since he did not see it that way, he did not do that at all. So when he did put me in the last 5 minutes of what it seemed to be every blue moon, that's not exact. But, he would get upset and pull me right back out of the game because I was not doing anything right. This is because he did not teach me the right thing to do. It even happened at practices, there was very many days when he just…

My passion is soccer which I have played soccer since I was 5. I was put in soccer because my mom and my dad were athletic and played many sports as a child. I was very active always running around so soccer was a good way to get my energy out. As I got older, I continued to play because I found it fun and it was nice to meet new people but I never truly felt the love for soccer until I was eight. I was on a team called, Too Hot to Handle with Coach Kakimoto.…

The team got together the next week for the yearly season ending party. I walked into my coaches house with guilt still hanging on my shoulders. To my surprise though, no one seemed to be mad at me, even when I had lost us the game, and they had to be upset about not winning the championship title. When our captain had started to organize teams for a little kick-around session, I realized why no one was disappointed at me, or in general for that matter. It was possibly the pressure of winning or the excitement that I might finally live up to my sister’s standards, but somewhere along the way I had forgotten why my teammates and I played soccer in the first place. Although it would have been great, it wasn’t to gain a tournament title or win the game. It was because we all shared the love of the game. I didn’t need to receive a trophy or even come out with an underdog win to have fun playing soccer with some of my closest friends, but apparently I needed to freeze up to remember…

Starting soccer when I was only five years old was challenging because of my October birthday I had to play with all the six year olds. My parents had put me in soccer because I was a young boy filled with too much energy. After playing soccer for about a year I decided I wanted to do more, I loved the sport. I started playing club soccer when I was 7 years old, playing for under the wing of Charley Amblo. This was a training team only, it was not till I was nine that I was started playing for a travel team. This was the beginning of where I learned my leadership, time management, and teamwork dynamics.…

For my cross-cultural assignment I interviewed Wally who is from The Ivory Coast located in West Africa. Wally moved to America when he was 14 years old. He is a soccer coach at the Roswell Rd Recreational Center at the current age of 18, which he has been doing for 2 years now. The typical work day as Wally described is like a party because he is constantly around kids who are full of energy. I asked Wally what encouraged him to do this line of work and his reasons were for the love that he has in soccer which is a big sport in Africa and for the cash that he makes in which he uses for himself and to help support his family. To be a coach you must know the sport in which you are coaching, how to use your players in their best abilities to make the team flow, and how to actually play the sport. Wally likes being a soccer coach because he loves the sport and likes teaching the sport to young players to better their skills. Even though he loves being a soccer coach there are still problems that he must deal with. Some consist of kids being violent and fighting and not playing together as a team but that’s what you get when you are dealing with a younger group of kids. Also the parents can be a pain as well because when their kid does not get in the game they feel as if their child is not getting the attention that they deserve. As Wally explained to me he rotates all players every game to give every kid a chance to get out there and have fun but when the game is close he puts the better players in to have a better chance of winning and also said when the game is out of reach kids get rotated more often. Overall Wally says that the people treat him good they love him being the soccer coach and feel that he does great with the kids. Since Wally was already active in soccer in The Ivory Coast the job he has now is like 2nd nature. Since Wally has been working at the rec. center he feels like he has the…
