Personal Narrative: My American Dream
The American Dream When I was nine I moved to Newark, New Jersey from Ecuador to have a better life. The whole time I was in Newark my mother would always tell me to study hard and go to college because I can do anything I could in this country. At that age I had different plans and having a successful career wasn’t on my to do list. I joined the military at the age of 18 to explore the world and leave Newark, because it wasn’t a good place to live. After joining and going through training I did travel to different places around the world and college was still not on my priority list. You see everything different when your 18 and don’t have anyone to tell you what to do with your off time. I did everything fun that I can think of and decided that I would just retired in the military and not worry about school anymore. Three years ago I started to …show more content…
Being in the military and going on deployments made it hard to attend a traditional college so I decided to attend an online college to have flexibility with my classes. The hardest part from all of these was to start the process of school and taking the placing exams to see where I fitted in the curriculum. After taking the placing exam and seeing the score I received I felt like I would never complete school because of how behind I was. My wife was one of the people that helped me through this and keep me motivated to continue with my education. There were some days that I felt like why am I doing this, I don’t understand this and I should just stay in the military and retire and not worry about school. I faced this way of thinking for a long time especially when classes were hard or got a bad grade on a test or essay. Eventually I was able to see that going to college even if I stayed in was going to help me succeed in the military and

Sitting here, as a new student in an on online college course, reflecting back the past 30 years is really something. It is funny how fate (and bad decisions) will put you in a situation that you never thought you would be in, until it slaps you in the face. I never thought too much about school. I certainly did not think I would find myself in college, much less so late in my life. Let me start at the beginning, and explain the best that I can why I am returning to school after all these years.…

A recent event in my life where I felt proud was getting enough money to help my parents pay for bills and succeed and pursue "the american dream". I started to work for HoneyBaked Ham part time since I was eligible to work. The paychecks felt great and giving them to my parents was felt better. As my sister and I get ready for college, the money got tight and I did gigs on the side. I did everything from landscaping to repairing phone screens. Felt stressful but, mind over matter right? Thats exactly what my parents thought when they moved overseas to the new world. I felt a huge sense of pleasure as I could see stress lift off their shoulders when I gave them the money This would help me in college because I know I can give myself the extra…

In 2014 I came to America to study. It had been the first time I ever traveled somewhere without my parents and it was a much farther distance than I had ever traveled before. My English wasn't the best and I wasn't sure of how I would handle American customs and culture. When my student visa was approved I was very excited and very nervous, it was a big moment for me. When the time came I boarded my plane and made the journey to America. My time here has been very hard but also very fortunate for me. I have been able to study just like I had planned and I have been able to live in several different states which I am very grateful for. Over time I have been able to improve my English, thus giving me the ability to have a proper conversation with someone I may have met on a random day at the store or during my time in class.…

In 2006 I moved to California with my parents, to pursue the American Dream that was dreamed by every foreigner It was seen as a great way to escape the danger and poverty we faced everyday in Peru. When we finally got here, the american dream was a myth, and working hard barely got you anywhere. Since day 1 both my parents have worked more than 40 hours a week to get food on the table, and the table back in Peru. They both support their parents and siblings financially, meaning there is no aid for me here. I wake up to do everything by myself, cook, clean, go to school, and especially homework. The workload from school kept getting harder each year, and it got worse during the start of high school. When I first arrived back from my first day of 9th grade I had to annotate a poem written by Shakespeare. As I sat down to do the homework I realized I didn't know what annotating meant. I asked my parents for help and they didn’t even knew who Shakespeare was. The same routine happened everyday, it's even happening now as I ask for advice on how to apply for college. No answer.…

When I graduated high school I knew I was going to attend college. It wasn’t a question. It was instilled in me as a child that I would be the only one of my siblings to go to school. My brothers would be forced into the military. It was never a desire of mine to attend college. It was more like the expected next step. Needless to say my passion for school was null and void. I attribute my academic standing to this fact. Maybe if I'd thought about what I wanted to do with my life versus just going with what was expected I would've done a little better.…

I have many goals that I have set for myself over the course of my life. Most of these goals I have set for myself, I have achieved with hard work and dedication. One of my many goals I had set for myself before coming into the military was to further my education. I probably would have never made it through the first semester of college, lacking the proper discipline and being immature I decided to join the United States Air Force. I thought it was a good idea to get the Air Force to pay for my education and I would be able to see the world. Though I joined the Military to further my education it took my 10 long years to start on my goal. I would always put college off till next year or later. With the help of a couple of friends I decided to return to school this year and chose the University of Phoenix as my decision.…
