Personal Narrative: Less Of A Professional Writer
Throughout this semester, I have learned many skills on how to be more of a professional writer. In the beginning, my papers were lacking in many places and as I continued, they became stronger in those places through time and effort. Throughout this self-reflection, you will learn what I improved upon and what I have yet to master.
One of my mistakes I make when writing a paper is the simple words I used. In my personal narrative, I said,”When I lost the most important thing in my life.” Thing could have met anything. If I changed the word to people that would be more specific. “The irony in this story is the townspeople from the essay thought he was an angel, but why did they treat him like an aberration?” (Literary Analysis). Instead of using an unprofessional, and

I never put commas in my paper unless it was before __. “We cannot afford healthier food because the junk food we need to avoid, is cheaper and more accessible,”(Argumentative Essay). In this sentence, I forgot to put a comma before because and cheaper. Putting commas in an essay became easier the more I wrote other papers. “Mary Stephenson, who earned her masters in counseling at Webster University, said she had “an absent father during my childhood and being a practising therapist, I became interested in the potential impact of that early childhood experience on my practice of counselling and psychotherapy,”(2)”(Proposing a Solution). In this sentence I could have forgotten to add a comma after Stephenson or said but when I proofread my paper the sentence made more sense to add one. Another skill I lacked in the beginning of the semester is to how to end my conclusion paragraph. “The need of the community is to start thinking about the tax now before it's too late,”(Argumentative Essay). In this example, I did not leave to the reader of very well. Saying that it is the community needs to start thinking about the problem is not going to get the reader to understand and fix the problem.

My writing process is usually all over the place, I have to be in my room with my door shut, my music on, my fan on, and my television on, weird, I know, but that is what I have to do in order to keep myself concentrated. After I am all situated I begin by writing down different ideas on a couple sheets of paper, listing ways I could support this idea and how it relates to my topic, sometimes when I am stuck I look up sample essays online to help me out of my rut. Once I finally choose an idea I start writing the first things that pop into my head down on another sheet of paper, it usually ends up being a jumbled mess that only I can understand. After all of my ideas are laid out onto the paper I begin placing numbers beside them so I know…

The beginning process of writing this paper was a very intimidating process for me. But with your help and the help of one of my peers, I think I’ve come a long way with the quality and formatting of my essay. My peer suggested that I use in text citations. Once I researched this to be sure it was necessary, I reviewed my paper and made these adjustments to the best of my understanding. She also pointed out that my thesis statement did not describe the effectiveness of the authors’ rhetorical device. I would not have caught this error otherwise. I expanded my thesis statement to better describe this effectiveness. In both of my feed backs it was mentioned that I didn’t have a strong conclusion. So by restructuring my final paragraph this allowed me to expand in my conclusion. Adding to it a final prospective on Kate Harding’s story.…

The amount I have changed as a writer is unbelievable. The biggest change is that I no longer loathe writing a paper. I feel as though it comes more naturally than before, and I can now make complete sentences easier than ever before. Another thing that has changed is how quickly I can write a paragraph before I would struggle getting a cohesive thought on a page, but now writing a paragraph that relates all together in some way is easier. All of this brings me onto my next point.…

In all seriousness, my writing is garbage, but it some what improved the slightest bit because I had a professor who actually knows how to teach a English class and not give little hints on telling us if our paper was trash. Instead, we were told straight if it was a good paper or not and it has probably helped me improve the most. In High School, I was always told that my papers were “good,” thankfully I finally had a Professor who can give it to me straight and tell us how we can improve our writing. On all the RRs, RWL, and formal essays that I have written these past twelve weeks, I have gotten educational criticism that has helped my pathetic writing become less pathetic and somewhat college worthy writing.…

In the past a thousand weeks, I feel like I have accomplished a great deal. As the quarter ends, I find myself reflecting not only how I have survived my fifth quarter but also what I have learned. The most important thing I have learned so far is how to become a better writer. I did not think it could really happen to me. I did not think I could handle all the work. I did not think I could actually become a better writer. Somehow, after all the hours of writing, and putting effort into my papers that I wrote in this quarter, I became a better writer. I did this because I concentrated on two very important areas. With help from an awesome teacher and my partner, I have become a better writer by improving my skills in the areas of procrastination and content.…

I am writing this quick letter to introduce myself and tell you a bit about my accomplishments and aspirations as a writer. I won't say that writing is in my blood or my genes or anything like that, but I will say that I do have an insatiable urge to write. I cannot say, but I definitely feel that writing is a passion of mine that I greatly enjoy. It is an urge that can only be satisfied and, even then, only temporarily, by stringing words together into a narrative. Ultimately, I greatly enjoy writing, although I do not consider myself to be stellar at it; I would call it a passion more than anything else.…

During the past four years of attending Newark High School, working on MLA format was something teachers worked very hard on to teach students. Every essay written by each student had to be correctly written in MLA format or else you would fail a writing assignment. This has been taught since the start of Freshmen year of school. There was no way around this rule. From just graduating High School, I am very experienced with writing essays. In many different classes we had to write essays. We did not just write essays in English. Students had to write essays in Math, Biology, Psychology, French, History, Government, and many more classes.…

I remember, when I was younger, that I wasn't fond with the idea of writing. I remember after writing out paragraphs upon paragraphs my hands always hurting and my brain exhausted from all the mental thinking and processing of writing. However, I would have this feeling; this sensation when I would write with thought, with passion and I carved it. However, it was hard to find a place that was felt the same kind of passion that I felt for writing and could help hone my writing. Then, I found out about BISFA that could help me with my writing, but my English teacher, who was supportive in my decision, told me a question all writers should always themselves, Why do you write? I figured that I would have an answer, but it I didn't. However, it…

Thinking of creative ways on how to develop my paper is a strong suit I benefit while taking on a writing assignment. When given a topic to write about, I write down what comes into my head. I do not worry about the word count if the sentences make sense on paper or even punctuation. I write to avoid forget any important points I might have thought of. This method of writing is where my weaknesses show. Sometimes what I wrote makes sense in my head, but not on paper. Other challenges I face with writing assignments are time management and punctuation.…

Writing has never been easy for me. In school, I have always had good grades. Some subjects came naturally like biology, history, and even math. I have always had struggles and difficulties when it comes to writing. This is due to the fact that English is not my first language, and that I am still learning. I started to learn how to speak, and listen, and mainly write in English when I was in ninth grade. Writing has been the hardest to deal with it, because I have many spelling and mechanical errors and most importantly, how to organize an essay, but this changed when I took English 49 with Professor Lucero. In my first day of class, I was assigned to write an essay about my experience with writing. I was not completely sure on how to start my essay and how to organize it. When I was in High School, I did not write many essays, and the few I did, I have endless help. So, I just my…

Although this was one of the smaller and easier assignments, I found it amazing how word choice can portray a variety of different stories. I felt that I was able to build a more detailed image of my Holocaust victim, almost as if were were given the opportunity to retell their story. In contrast, there was one assignment in particular that I had a difficult time completing and turning in a solid final product. I struggled the most with the timed writing prompt for the novella Anthem by Ayn Rand.To explain, I turned in a horrendous paper when our forty-five minutes were complete. While writing this paper, there were so many things that I wanted to say in order to cover every fine detail of my character, but by attempting to cover every fine detail, I lost sight of the assignment at hand. I did not pull out the proper information in order to trace my character correctly throughout the novel. In addition, as time began running down, I began to rush my thoughts and ended my writing with scattered ideas, and careless grammar…

I have always had faith in my writing capabilities; however, it wasn’t until I started my first year of college English, that I realized no matter how great of a writer I thought I was, there was always room for improvement! Some of my strengths as a writer include personality, voice, and the ability to add transitions that give character to my writing style. I have many weaknesses in my writing: grammar, spelling, punctuation (which I happen to be working on every time I write), and many other quirks that a brilliant writer would catch. Between paper one and paper two, I have mastered projecting my “voice”, as well as my personality. I like my papers to feel as though I was sitting next to the reader and chatting with them about my story.…

Ever since I was born, I was a military brat. Not knowing where to call home, or if any place could be home, I moved. I moved six times, four of those places were towns that nobody could think about. Germany, North Carolina, Alaska, North Carolina, Germany, and Alaska, yet no place to call home. May 22, 1999, my first day on this world; Kronach hospital had its first American baby in their hands, yet they acted like I was a different species. The only event I remember was when I was about one. While I was one, I grabbed everything in my reach, even a grill handle. As a baby, I did not know that the handle was moving, the grill top had smashed my thumb. Ever since that event, I now have a starfish mark on the side of my right thumb from where the stiches were.…
