Personal Narrative: Josh Gad's Scent Of A Woman
Absorbed in my laptop screen, I watched as Josh Gad, then a young man clad in a dapper, cinereal suit and burgundy tie, delivered the speech that changed my perspective. “As Al Pachino so eloquently states in the movie Scent of a Woman: ‘hoo ha,’” Gad shifts his gaze across his audience, “that’s it. That’s all he stated.” The audience erupts into incessant laughter as soon-to-be National Forensic League Original Oratory champion proudly and confidently soaks it all in. Josh Gad became my aspiration; a two time Original Oratory and a one time Humorous Interpretation Champion. As my interest in performance extended beyond that of the speech and debate realm, I fell in love with his origination of the role Elder Cunningham in the Book of Mormon. So when I finally discovered that he received his B.F.A. at Carnegie Mellon’s College of Fine Arts, I knew that I had to follow his advice and “strive to take the chance” in applying to the same program.

Now, I strive to understand the motivations and backgrounds around me in order to form stronger relationships. Understanding people---fictional or living---is the key to truly being an empathetic individual that contributes significantly to a community.
