Fbla Reflection
A week after my junior year of high school concluded I found myself giving a speech before 12,000 of my high school peers as I ran for national office at the Future Business Leaders of America’s National Leadership Conference in Atlanta, GA. Exactly two years ago I was at the same conference, but visibly shaking as I presented my case study to just three judges. Giving that campaign speech was a risk. Public speaking was my nemesis, just two years ago, I couldn’t speak to three people. Now, I stood in front of 12,000. It pushed me in ways in could have never imagine, and it transformed me in ways I could never have imagine.
In my sophomore year, our FBLA chapter advisor moved to another school, and the new business teacher opted to not continue

I prepared myself to face my worst fear, public speaking. A speech alone was a daunting prospect. A speech alone in front of 12,000 people without a podium was seemingly impossible. This speech, however, represented my development throughout high school. The content reflected my experience and accomplishments as an FBLA member and an officer. My hand gestures, tone, even smile, were choreographed to the syllable, a tribute to my growth in planning and the hours spent practicing speaking for case studies and events.
The final seconds before I took the stage gave me the clearest insight into FBLA’s impact on me. Usually the moment before walking on stage was like when I would look down from the top of the water slide with my friends at the bottom goaded me to go; pure fear. Yet, this moment was different. I was calm, composed, at an equilibrium. When I walked on stage and bellowed “Good evening FBLA!”, the smile was sincere, not forced through a fright-stricken face as I had done two years ago. My trials and success in FBLA had prepared me for this moment.
It is the challenges that shape you and define who you are. I have had the privilege of serving FBLA members in my chapter, state, and now throughout our entire association as the FBLA National Treasurer. Each moment shaped me into a leader, defining who I am today. As I enter the next stage in my life, I will take on each challenge as a continuation of my legacy of

During my research on a public speaker, I had come across this motivational and leadership speaker Steve Bedwell. On February 17, 2012, he gave a speech on how people tend to act towards different situations and other people. In an auditorium full of business and health care leaders he also jump starts them into effective action with what goes on in the world with people.…

Giving a speech that solely relies on the power of communication is one that takes years of practice. Without the support of any visual effects, the speaker will have to use meticulous diction and direction to maintain momentum in order to keep the audience involved in the topic being discussed. With over twenty-years of on-stage experience, Coyote effectively portrays the message of the talk. With the use of body language and diction, the tempo of the talked played directly into the strengths Coyote brought to the table as a…

Future Business Leaders of America members are taught to work toward their future occupational goals by job shadowing, interning, or working at jobs that are specialized to their desired career. This is exactly what many of our FBLA members are involved in. At the State Leadership Conference and the Southern Area Conference, members attended workshops by people and companies, such as Men’s Wearhouse, on leadership, campaigning, and dressing appropriately for business. These workshops provided new ways and methods of developing student’s knowledge and skills in order for them to be prepared for a career.…

During my years in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), I have experienced novel challenges with officer duties, competitive event preparation, and chapter activities. In the beginning, more experienced members encouraged and lead me to find success in the organization, and as the school years have progressed, I have evolved to pass that same support onto others.…

Speaking in front of a large audience is hard for many people. It’s even harder and scarier if you have one of many types of learning disabilities. Add to that, trying to practice, memorize, and recite a famous speech that was spoken a century and a half ago when typical word usage was of a different style than what it is commonly used today. This can make the task of learning the speech seem impossible. Ken Burns’ documentary “The Address” (PBS 2014) takes place at the Greenwood School in Putney, Vermont. Part of their curriculum every year, for students that have not already completed it, is to learn the history behind and recite the Gettysburg Address from memory to earn a school coin. It’s a difficult and daunting task for many of the students at the Greenwood School, but by the end, it helps the students gain confidence in public speaking and overcome some of the fears they have. Ken Burns and his…

Being in a teenage mind, we often don’t think that the future is now. We tend to describe what we want our future to be like, but don’t ever describe how are we going to get there and what are the characteristics that are needed. That’s what FBLA is here for to teach us those characteristics to become successful. Like I’ve mentioned before, Confidence, I feel as if confidence is the key to life. Without confidence, I wouldn’t be standing here today among you all speaking my mind. In fact wouldn’t be standing here today as the VP of Hennery W. Grady High school’s FBLA. Before I became the VP I had to persuade to my peers and stand up tall & tell them why I should be there VP and when I actually got picked honestly I can say I did get just a bit more confidence since that day forth.…

In the article, “Unlock your voice”, Mary morris discusses how important it is to speak up, and find your voice. She gives us a glimpse into her childhood, where it all started before she finally found her voice, she states “ when I was in first grade, my class performed a school play to celebrate abraham lincoln”. After weeks of her rehearsing and practicing, when it came time for her performance she couldn’t say her line, she “stammered and sputtered, and in the end someone else said it for her”. This is something that many people fear when they think about public speaking, such as myself. Sometimes it even starts to eat at you and make you run the other way, it even makes you alter your decisions in your life, and makes you question, just like morris why this happens?. Morris, later finds out that studies have shown that “something happens to young girls during their development that gives them stage…

Over the course of Quarter, I composed more than a few FRQs. Throughout my many in-class essays, I learned not only about rhetorical analysis, but also some tendencies I have as a writer. In all four of my essays, the most prominent trend I exemplified was a lack of focus on certain pieces of my analysis. Often, I would provide a strong analysis of certain evidence, but then would begin to stray from my original point. Occasionally, my sentences proved nothing, such as when I wrote that, “This major depiction of the two vastly different sides of the soldier’s lives makes the men seem more real and human”. Another pattern that was prevalent in my FRQs was writing one or two sentences that seemed clumsy or awkward to the reader. One such sentence…
