Personal Narrative: In The Night
I was able to attend MOVES in Minneapolis while visiting family. Parking was difficult, so I arrived late and missed most of In the Night. I had wanted to see Unity Phelan especially in this ballet. Maybe she'll dance it in New York.

Jacqueline Bologna was featured in La Stravaganza. She is a good dramatist and danced well. Christopher Grant and Harrison Coll also caught my attention.

Chase Finlay and Abi Stafford danced Sonatine. I liked Chase in this piece. Abi Stafford has technique, but her artistry is not as interesting to me.

After the Rain received the most applause. It was my mother's favorite of the night, and the couple sitting next to us began leaving through their programs because they wanted to know more about the

In Fall 2012 there was a production called Jubilation taken place in El Camino College in the Campus Theatre. The Dance consist of many different styles of dancing from African dance by Nichole “Nittche” Thompson Spirit Within, to Tango as demonstrated in La Revancha Del Tango, choreographed by Imara Quinonez. One of the most common and best performed dances that was presented in the production were The Gift and Broadway Bound, choreographed by Bernice Boseman. Broadway Bound consisted of twelve dancers, and performed as a single group of girls, a single group of guys, and girls and guys dancing together. However, in the performance of The gift there was just one guy that performed his solo.…

Saucedo. Sky Dance contains a great contrast in mood and pace, beginning at a light, swift speed and falling into a deep, lyrical movement. Overall, I was satisfied with the wind ensemble’s concert performance of the piece, but I think we had a considerable amount of rushing and intonation. For starters, I believe we began the piece rather rushed and continued with that pace throughout the faster section of the piece. As a result, I think the rushing caused us to play rhythms inaccurately. Measures seven to seventeen were fairly discordant and did not run together musically. Likewise, I noticed some uncertainty about notes and rhythm with the flute section at measure twenty-six. Opposite to preceding points, I think we performed the section at measure thirty-seven superior to how we played during practice. Also, the section “Suddenly Slow” made a great transition into the “Expressively” and “Boldly” sections of the song. Unfortunately, there was a great deal of errors with intonation in measures sixty-nine through seventy-five. Conversely, we had a nice, long build up before a very powerful and intense section at eighty-six. Lastly, I thought the timpani feature at measure one hundred nineteen was played perfectly, but thereafter, the band was rushed and imprecise. All flaws aside, Sky Dance was my favorite of the two pieces performed because of the emotion and power felt in the middle…

I also noticed there were a lot of lifts and pointed toes when the male dancer carried and lifted his partner. Then another portion of the dance occurred after the previous dancer took their bows and the certain closed. The curtains then lifted and the lights turned on and the background turned into different colors. Then the dancers started appearing on stage and there was an abundance of dancers. The females in the performance were wearing different colors and so were the male dancers.…

The piece of art that stuck out to me the most was Mairiam/Bijou, choreographed by Angela Jordon. The dance has a storyline which is Mairiam descends from a west African village, poor in wealth, but rich in tradition and family bonds. Along her journey with life she falls in love with a king and becomes queen. She is torn between her new life and old life. The piece of art begins with African women doing their daily activities, which was washing. From there, the story unfolds through dance, music, and costumes. The music took you back to the motherland with the musicians playing the congos and the singer who seem to be singing in an African language. The costumes show the difference class levels- poor folks wearing brown, green and royalty wore purple and gold. (purple symbolizes royalty). The choreography builds up along with the music to the end. (coda) the…

The entire recital performance was about an hour and a half long. I was mostly surprised that the performance started on time. In addition, there weren’t any introduction of the performance at the start of the show. Or did they announce who was coming out to begin. The lights were dimmed to indicate the show was about to begin. The sitting of the concert hall was very different from any other show that I attended. The audience was seated in a semi-circle, facing the stage. The audience consisted of many students, elders, middle aged Caucasian people, and families. There were also several microphones hanging from the ceilings. As the performance entered the stage, they were both dressed in dark suits with white shirts. They were similar to watching an entire orchestra play in a concert hall.…

I always keep this poem and picture in my wallet. I take it everywhere with me because it means quite a lot to me in two very different ways. One of those ways is because it holds sentimental value. When I was younger I learned to read very late in life and I was always so embarrassed of that. My father knew that I was struggling and bought me the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is a book full of poems and little pictures written by Shel Silverstein. I remember opening the book to ta random page, and it was the page with this poem. I then remember my dad asking me to read it to him. I was so uncomfortable, even thought I was just going to be reading to my dad. He gave me some words of encouragement, and even thought I was not able to read…

The dance performance was called Synapse Dance Theater, a Santa Monica College contemporary dance ensemble, which took place at The Broad Stage on November 6, 2013 at 4pm. In the dance performance there were twelve dance works that were remarkably different in various ways. Each work gave a different feeling and emotion while being unrelated to each other all at the same time. The choice of music had a tremendous impact on each of the dance works as well as being different from one another. The fast and slow music and the powerful and energetic choreography made Synapse what it is, a fascinating and extraordinary dance performance.…

The Nutcracker was filled with several beautiful dancers and dance moves. The show was directed by Cheri Lindell, and danced by several Dance Center North dancers. The main characters of the show included Clara, the Sugar Plum Fairy, the Snow Queen, the Nutcracker and several more. It was a wonderful experience in which I had seen several of my friends dance. I am good friends with several girls that had dance in this show including Kelly Vogel, Ellen Barhorst, Abby Paulson, and Emily Smith. Most of my friends had minor roles including Marzipan, the Maid, the Sugar Plum Court. Although they all danced beautifully, Emily Smith had stood out to me the most. She danced her parts with grace and accuracy! Watching her makes me want to hop on stage and dance along.…

The second piece was a solo, and it was so inspirational. Cantoria 1 & 2 for solo cello, by Marlos Nobre. Jacob was breathing hard, playing an overwhelming amount of notes all so fast. You could really see the passion in his face, and his entire body language. He is such a professional and advanced performer who clearly has a very bright future in his music career. This musical number was also one that threw curve balls at me, because of the continually changing tempo and tones from romantic to suspenseful. All the pieces were long in duration, and that really impressed me because it’s clear that they put in so much effort and time with practicing, and then preforming perfectly. Music is a really powerful thing, and it was the most clear how much passion he has for what he does, and that’s what makes a great musician. His vibrato was impressive to watch, and it made me wish I had played cello longer.…
