Reaction Paper On Alvin Ailey
The dance show that I went to was called Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. The place of the performance is 131 W 55th Street between 6th and 7th avenues. The date and time of the performance was Saturday, Dec 16, 2017 at 2:00pm. I was 20 minutes late to the first performance because of the heavy traffic, but i did see a portion of the first dance. Heysel and I both saw this dance performance together. The order of the dances were The winter in Lisbon choreographed by Billy Wilson, Night Creature , Cry and Revelations which all werel choreographed by the Alvin Ailey company. The composer of music for Winter in Lisbon was Dizzy Gillespie and Charles. The composer for Night Creature was Duke Ellington. The composer of music for Cry was Alice

It was founded in 1958 by choreographer and dancer Alvin Ailey. It is made up of 32 dancers. Now Alvin Ailey was an African-American choreographer and activist. He was born on January 5, 1931 and died December 1, 1989. He is credited with popularizing modern dance and revolutionizing African-American participation in 20th-century concert dance. Although the company was founded in 1958, that year the first performance of Alvin Ailey American Theater happened on March 30, Alvin Ailey and a group of young, black modern dancers perform for the first time as members of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater at New York’s 92nd Street. What i first noticed when I first entered the performance center was a duet dancing slowly. The girls’ costume was a purple color and she was wearing a tank top and a flowy skirt. The male dancer was wearing simple purple pants that were obviously moveable. I particularly noticed the lighting that was on the floor. On the floor seemed to be a projection of snowflakes and cool blue lighting on top. The music for this section of the first dance was slow mellow jazz trumpet like sounds. I noticed that the dancers moved all around the sage and their spacing between each other was close. It seemed like they were on top of each other. The tempo of the beat was slow and the duet emphasized the movement of the legs they also had a smooth fluid energy. There was no stillness in this dance. I also noticed there were a lot of lifts and pointed toes when the male dancer carried and lifted his partner. Then another portion of the dance occurred after the previous dancer took their bows and the certain closed. The curtains then lifted and the lights turned on and the background turned into different colors. Then the dancers started appearing on stage and there was an abundance of dancers. The females in the performance were wearing different colors and so were the male dancers. The colors varied from blue, purple, yellow and orange.
