Concert Report #3 On Friday, May 2, 2014 at 5:30 P.M. I attended my favorite concert yet at the Morrison Center Recital Hall. It was a cello concert with graduate Jacob Saunders, accompanied by Betsi Hodges on the piano. The scene was beautiful, and the energy was great. White Christmas lights, and the position of the instruments made me feel like I was at a classy coffee shop in France. The cello and piano were the first instruments I ever learned how to play, and I went with a friend who plays the cello currently, so we both had a great appreciation for the show. I sat next to Jacob Saunders parents, and to see how proud they were through out the show was a special thing to be a part of. Sonata for Cello and Piano by Claude Debussy, the first piece was jazzy, then romantic, then mysterious. It really set the tone for the rest of the concert. The first piece really showed a lot of variety in the tones and tempos of the song, and it was so interesting to listen to because I never knew what was going to happen next. The second piece was a solo, and it was so inspirational. Cantoria 1 & 2 for solo cello, by Marlos Nobre. Jacob was breathing hard, playing an overwhelming amount of notes all so fast. You could really see the passion in his face, and his entire body language. He is such a professional and advanced performer who clearly has a very bright future in his music career. This musical number was also one that threw curve balls at me, because of the continually changing tempo and tones from romantic to suspenseful. All the pieces were long in duration, and that really impressed me because it’s clear that they put in so much effort and time with practicing, and then preforming perfectly. Music is a really powerful thing, and it was the most clear how much passion he has for what he does, and that’s what makes a great musician. His vibrato was impressive to watch, and it made me wish I had played cello longer. After

I have never heard such music as this and watch the players articulate the movements and timing necessary to be able to play such difficult pieces as these. Their sound was like a whole orchestra playing with them but it was only four players. It was a whole new experience for me. These pieces were beautiful but I guess I just didn’t have an ear for the changes in pitch and frequency. It was quite odd but also added to the pieces. I can’t wait to go to other concerts. The atmosphere is unlike any other. This experience unmatched by other concert experiences I’ve…

Personally notable movements from the first piece of the program, Piano Trio in C Minor, Op. 2, are Andante and Vivace. Pappone, “lauded as a ‘first rate’ violinist by Maestro Lorin Maazel” and founder of the non-profit Delius Music Academy (Mallory Concert Series Program), executed technique perfection from my hearing. His pianoforte was divine and every note softly washed over the audience with pitch precision. Moving from the second to the third movement there was an exaggeration of sad drama. Even by looking at the instrumentalists faces it was clear this was far from an upbeat movement; as the three instruments meshed together in a gloomy way to match the weather. The end of the selection seemed to involve a…

The viola player tapping the viola with the bow to make a sound like blink blink blink was creative in my eyes. It was interesting to see a beautiful piece played with only three instruments. The song is so beautiful that it sounds like music you would hear in a fairy tale forests. I liked the piece “Soft Watches” by Ileana Perez-Valazquez. It was a creative and fun idea to make the piece based off the painting Salvador Dali’s famous painting “Persistence of Memories”.…

Holding truth today and in the past, attending classical concerts is hailed as a sign of both sophistication and style. Very reminiscent of 18th Century attendances at places like the Music Center at Strathmore, my noteworthy experience broadened my musical horizon. As a newcomer to classical concert-going, I was enthralled by the aural masterpieces and the alluring atmosphere. In partaking in the National Philharmonic's opening concert of the year at the Music Center at Strathmore, one experiences the warm ambiance of classical music in modern times while retaining its renowned value.…

On February 22nd 2013, I had my first bargemusic at Fulton Street pier in Brooklyn. Bargemusic is an old barge that converted into a chamber music hall. It was a great pleasure to have such a terrific concert on a Friday night. The internal of the barge was so classical with aged wall chairs. In the middle of the room is a stage with a piano that was shining when lights were facing above it. A stupendous view of the Manhattan skyline out the glass wall was placed behind the stage which gives a perfect background of the performer. The performer was a piano musician called Olga Vinokur. The convert was officially started at 8:00pm after her short introduction.…

The concert was somewhat as I expected to be. The concert was so formal and organized. . Even though I had some prejudgments about the concert at first, I enjoyed listening to these pieces live. I will try to attend future classical music concerts. There were some parts where the management team could have done better. The artist demonstrated dynamics, technique, harmony and togetherness beautifully. Before leaving the concert hall I was able to speak briefly with some of the musicians, they were very helpful in answering my questions about the…

For my humanities report, I attended the Wind Ensemble concert at the Timko Barton lobby on October 8, 2015. The concert was so inspiring and refreshing for me since I love music and am currently studying music. Sitting with some many people and listening to beautiful music from a variety of genres was so restoring to the soul. Dr. John Jenkins, the director, was so motivating in every piece of music and of the program. The concert program ran smoothly as the ensemble band transitioned gradually to each different song piece. In addition the scenery added to the peaceful presence during the show. Since the concert took place in the lobby of the music hall, people saw the bright lights coming from the ceiling and they also enjoyed to majestic surrounding of the large glass windows. The Wind Ensemble concert event was a smoothing time to reflect on…

The first section of the concert was the most delightful and satisfying to listen to. The violins and woodwinds were the main melody for most of the piece. Both instrument made the texture of the beginning very calm and satisfying by playing legato notes that gradually crescendo/decrescendo. The texture made me to feel relaxed and at ease. I would describe the text painting as a calm ocean, the feeling of drifting in calm water. Half way through the piece, the clarinets and flutes began to follow the entire orchestra and its smooth tempo, which inevitably became louder and more powerful near the end of the piece.…

The first piece I have picked out was “Oh, Had I Jubal’s Lyre” performed by Women’s Glee Club. I have heard a loud and sharp sounding piece. It started off with the soprano singing with a high pitch voice; then the alto with strong, gradually loud voice. The instruments were presented in this piece was piano and treble voices. The tempo throughout this piece are moderato and allegro. In other words, the tempo was repeating from moderate to fast. The song made me feels a little chilling, but also exciting because the dynamics were crescendo to forte, pianissimo combined with the fortepiano make it sound really sharp in an exciting way. I enjoyed this piece because it makes me feel happy as I listened along.…

Venus in furs is the story of a man who loves one woman so much that he chooses to become her slave in order to not lose her. Severin meets his Venus in furs one night in a garden near his home; a red-headed woman with pale white skin and piercing green eyes. The first time he sees her, he runs away from her, but the second time, on his balcony, they make their acquaintances. She says that she was made curious about him from a picture he left in one of the books he lent her. So they discuss their differences in views of love and marriage and the relationship between men and women. She is of the opinion that the Christian viewpoint of marriage is flawed. One cannot expect a woman to stay in love with one man forever and ever. Severin expresses his opinion that in any relationship either the man or the woman will take the reins in a relationship. If the man does not quickly establish his place over the woman, then it is in her innate nature to take the reins and subjugate him. They continue their dialogue over time and he becomes more and more in love with her. She is resistant to his quest for marriage because she does not know yet if he is the man she can respect and therefore have a lasting relationship with. She asks to live with him for a year and then if the love is true she would marry him. In order not to lose her and to satisfy his desire to be controlled by his Venus, he asks that he may become her slave. At first she is resistant; she doesn’t think she has the predilection to be so cruel. But as the story unfolds she agrees to it with the warning to him that he may incite such cruelty that he may not want or expect from her.…

Two concerts I attended this semester were Steve Aoki and Datsik and “The Brown Bag Series.” Although two completely different music styles, they were both fun to attend and interesting to think about when considering their musical elements. Steve Aoki is an American electro house musician, record producer and founder of Dim Mak Record. Datsik is a Dubstep DJ and music producer from British Columbia, Canada. “The Brown Bag Series” was an instrumental concert consisting of six people, one being Professor Golove, who played instruments such as the cello, the double bass, and the piano.…

For this concert report analysis, I was not able to actually go see a concert in person. So I watched a video on youtube since that was an option for this assignment. On Youtube, I watched an orchestral concert that was performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. From what I saw, the string instruments that were being played by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in this particular video are; the violin, the violas, the cellos, the double bass, and the harp. And the wind instruments that were being played are…
