ENG 102

He Should Have been Great Alexandria, Alabama is the place I call home. Alexandria high school was a small 4A school about 20 minutes from Gadsden. Sports basically owned the town. I started playing sports when I was six years old with a group of about 15 boys, and we played together until my senior year of high school. At Alexandria the coaches wanted the “athletes” to play all three sports: football, baseball, and basketball because we were a small school and needed all the help we could get in every sport. Growing up we had an outfielder by the name of Josh Ray, who could catch any ball hit into the outfield. He made it look so easy and we all knew that he was going to be great

Athletics has been an integral component of my entire life. While never being the most athletic or skilled, baseball was my passion growing up. The sport served as a garden for me to grow as a person, learn invaluable lessons, and gain friendships that will last a lifetime. After years of playing year-round, I was blessed to have the option of playing at a couple Small Division II schools or pursue a more academically rigorous degree at UVa. Ultimately, I chose the latter and it has been at the University of Virginia where CrossFit transformed from a supplementary regimen to my passion.…

Of course I ended up playing those sports, but I wasn't happy because I wanted to play football and nothing else. The years went by and I still did not play a snap of football and it was already the fifth grade where most kids have already played for years. Finally on my last plea my parents let me play football in the sixth grade. I played football in a youth league called PAFA (Palatine Amatuer Football Association), This is where I was taught proper technique and how to play the game safe. Finally, I was done with youth football, next up the big stage, high school football. Sports were established so that the individual could not only exercise, but also to compete against a rival. Just as there are individual sports, there are team sports in high school. The idea of a team sport is that every single person on the field or court must work in unison to have the greatest opportunity to win. In addition to the increasing popularity of sports, the average child’s age when they join a team is decreasing.
