Admissions Essay

Within the first 5 minutes on the Springfield campus, on my way to the admissions tour, I came across a student who happened to be wearing New York Knicks apparel. We engaged in conversation about a previous nights game the Knicks played, as I happen to be a Knicks fan myself. A few minutes after arriving on campus, I felt like I had something in common with at least one person at Springfield College. Will Springfield be a good fit for me? So far, so good!
Springfield offers so many sports related majors that would interest me. Being born into a family that lived and breathed sports, that’s all I knew at first, but that was all I needed. By the time I could walk, my father put a baseball bat in my hand for me to swing around. As far as I can remember, sports was a part of me, my first love. The YMCA played an extremely large role early on in my life, introducing me to the various sports I love. I first learned how to swim in the Flushing YMCA in Queens, NY. I learned how to play organized baseball and basketball at the Long Island City YMCA in Queens, NY. My father volunteered as a coach at the Long Island City YMCA for many years. I sometimes assisted him with baseball clinics, instructing younger kids with fielding and throwing drills.
Because of Springfield’s history in sports, I feel this would be a huge opportunity for me to better prepare myself for a career in Physical Education, especially with the schools close ties to the YMCA. Springfield could help me reach my goal in an area I love.
I have a good understanding of what Springfield has to offer, and feel that it would benefit me greatly. I like the idea of a smaller sized school and got a family oriented vibe, especially from the students on campus. I feel that a smaller school would help with possibly more individual attention and maybe developing a relationship with teachers. Because of the various sports related majors that Springfield has to offer, I feel Springfield College would be a perfect fit for me. Also, I know there is at least one Knicks fan on campus and that would make for a great beginning at Springfield.

There are multiple ways that recent trends in the sport industry are affecting the YMCA. A majority of them would be revolving around the economy and how the YMCA is considered a luxury to the people. Others would be the increase of fitness in the world and sport curiosity and also the elderly still maintaining their healthy lifestyles. Also, many people are beginning to try to find both healthier lifestyles and seeking a balance between work and leisure (Sports, 2007). Lastly, the way that kids are being taught is changing; practices are becoming known as best practices and the kids are learning more of the sport and becoming better (Stephens, 2009).…

The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) is an organization that gives people the chance to learn, grow, and thrive. It is community-centered and brings people together. There are a total of seven different branches in the Greater Grand Rapids Area, and a total of 120 countries that the YMCA is a part of (Julien). Throughout my life, I grew up with having a membership at the YMCA and would go a few times a week. I used the YMCA to stay active and fit, play some basketball, climb the rock wall, and hang out in the teen zone with friends I had met while attending the organization. From being a member of this community organization, I can easily say this is a great place for anyone and everyone. It definitely…

I made my way across the parking lot, towards the entrance to the gym. As I reached the double doors I paused, then slowly turning, I attempted to take in as much of the outside view as I could. I saw a green meadow dotted with a few thoughtfully placed picnic tables, a few baseball, and soccer fields. I also noticed that this place is home to a busy skateboard park right beside a well-kept playground. My pan of the scene had revealed to me that this place has grown into something more than what I had remembered it to be. Today this center welcomes people of all ages. In contrast, when the U.S. Air Force ran this facility it was for military personnel and their adult dependents. It was a simple gymnasium with a couple of minimally groomed baseball diamonds and multipurpose fields, lacking any beauty. Today, the sturdy old building and surrounding fields are a beautiful sight to behold, and maintained by a local community services organization. The quick survey of the sports center had reminded me that this place is still serving the community in a big way with its available venues and activities.…

Alexandria, Alabama is the place I call home. Alexandria high school was a small 4A school about 20 minutes from Gadsden. Sports basically owned the town. I started playing sports when I was six years old with a group of about 15 boys, and we played together until my senior year of high school. At Alexandria the coaches wanted the “athletes” to play all three sports: football, baseball, and basketball because we were a small school and needed all the help we could get in every sport.…

Athletics is ingrained in the human experience and is an integral part of American culture. Because of that, many of my weekends and after school hours have been dedicated to either watching a game or starting one with the kids in the neighborhood. Athletics runs deep in my family. My great uncle was a professional baseball player and my family, including my father, three brothers and a sister, are all very involved with the various team sports. It’s this immersion into various sporting activities that has led me to the understanding that engaging in athletics has a very positive impact in our lives. Additionally, sports are extremely important in building one’s character through hard work, learning to work with others on a team and by learning how to cope with the joy of winning and the inevitability of losing.…
