Personal Narrative: Assala, Ethiopia
Assala, Ethiopia, is the place I was born. It was a small, poverty-stricken village where we had limited access to healthcare. There is a lack of good cardiovascular surgeons in Ethiopia. “ I can not play or run any longer” was a phrase that I heard from one of my good friends at a young age. I remember my young friend suffering from heart disease in sixth grade, but he couldn’t get the proper medical attention because he didn’t have the money to go outside of Ethiopia to get the treatment he needed for his medical condition. I began thinking about becoming a cardiovascular surgeon at that moment because I was tired of seeing hundreds of people dying from lack of good medical care. I remember I did not even know how many arteries the heart had or the importance of the heart beside pumping blood, but to see people believing in me when I doubted myself made me to be aware that this was the right path for me. I was blessed to get an opportunity to shadow Dr. Victor because it made me realize that I can save many poor children in Ethiopia who can't afford treatment. Cornell University is co-educational, multicultural institution where admission is offered regardless of religion or race, and this would give me an opportunity to create an online chatroom for students to share their powerful stories and lift each others up to create a health environment at Cornell University. I aspire to go to a University that helps students to involve with their community, and Cornell University operates a cooperative extension outreach program by receiving a fund for educational missions. I was delighted when I read how Cornell University Sustainable Design team build a school in Ghana to educate about 500 girls every
