My obsession began in the sixth grade where i found myself fascinated with doing hair and the products and the foods that could improve your hair and skin and I wanted to learn more. By my freshman year in high school, I already knew what I wanted to focus on: cosmetology. My first cosmetology competition was Skills USA. I was chosen to compete in the 90 degree hair cut event. Once I arrived at the school for the competition, I noticed all types of different academies; academies from construction to culinary. I walked into the cosmetology room where my competition was being held. I began to set up my station, shampooing my manikin’s hair and pulling out my shears and razor blade. As the 40 minute timer started, I reached for my razor blade…

It was a regular Saturday morning, I was browsing through the day’s newspaper, the news entitled ‘Acid attack survivors’ grabbed my attention and I ended up reading the whole news. And as my thoughts were with the victims, two facts the cutting edge technology at this point of time laid forward stroke in my mind. First, how it gave the victims new lives and second, how the survivors could have their burned areas concealed with the artificial skin which to some extent restored their beauty and confidence too. But, what exactly was the artificial skin? The question kept on haunting me every now and then. Not to mention, I had never heard about the so called artificial skin before that instance. Well, I could not wait but find out what truly is…

My love for expression has led me to much success in my everyday life. Of course that an unlimited knowledge of writing would be impressive, but to me it would mean so much more. Writing has been like a getaway from all my problems, but in a way it has also been the solution. When I write, it feels as if I was telling the story of my life. I present myself with a problem that I am facing and make up and ending to the story as the solution to my problem. My ability to write touching essays has earned me much praise from teachers throughout my educational years. Having more talent and all the rules of writing at my disposal would be like an expressionist dream come true. This power would allow me to become a writer for the world and I would…

Over the past five years I had been working as a massage therapist. I chose massage therapy because I enjoyed working with people and had a passion for helping others. Although rewarding, there is a high level of physical demands required to meet the needs of each patient. As a therapist I placed each clients care first ensuring the integrity of each treatment, regardless of whether it was my first or last session. Integrity is a value I hold in the highest esteem. To me this means doing my absolute best in every task even when no one is watching. I choose to follow this code in every area of my life. Most fields of medicine accommodate to a certain type of client. Pathologists accommodate to patients who have a form of cancer. Pediatric Doctors only suit those under the age of eighteen. Gynecologists can only service women. Dermatologists however, can assist everyone. Dermatology, “is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases of the skin, hair, nails, oral cavity and genitals,” (“Dermatology Definition - Medical Dictionary”). Since every human being has the “largest human organ”, skin, everyone is likely to visit a dermatologist at some point in their existence (Stafford). I am interested in becoming a dermatologist because I would be of assistance to thousands of patients from all walks of life.…

My pursuit to become a physician began with a cupcake. One Halloween in the fifth grade, I had just finished giving cupcakes to the teachers in my school. With no more cupcakes left, an assistant teacher asked if I had a cupcake for her. Without thinking, I quickly ran to my classroom, grabbed my cupcake off my desk, and handed it to her. Her face lit up. Later that day the assistant called my home to thank me. She had diabetes and on that day, she had forgotten her lunch at home and was not feeling well. My act of giving her the cupcake at first was nothing more than an attempt to make someone’s day better. Yet, it was made even more gratifying when I realized how I improved her health. Her smile and appreciation sparked my interest in the…

Do I consider myself a writer? Yes. Do I consider myself a good writer? maybe. There are many instances in life when we as international college students, think we are not capable of doing certain things. For me writing was one of them, until I decided to become a filmmaker. Many people might think filmmakers just need a camera and lights to make a movie. However, writing is one of the most important parts of filmmaking--surprised?…
