Personal Experience: My Experience At Texas A & M
Being a child in a military family made it so that I have never been afraid of traveling, or being immersed into new cultures. My unique experience of living in 6 different states has made me appreciate and crave to gain more knowledge about cultures. Although I have not had the financial means to gain any international cultural experiences first hand, I have continuously consumed knowledge about new places through documentaries, research, and my education at Texas A&M. Studying human geography has been so rewarding in that it is my job, as a student, to learn as much as I can about different cultures around the world. I was not lucky enough to be a part of a freshman immersion program my first year of college, but it is never too late to start …show more content…
Giving young people the chance to step outside of their comfort zones allows them to more deeply connect with their own culture once they return home, but more importantly, broaden their understanding and view of the rest of the world. Having the chance to help in this unique type of student development would without a doubt challenge the leadership skills I gained in my previous two years of mentorship. My experience as mentor has given me the tools I need to know how to connect to students in short amounts of time. It would be so crucial for any student leader to know how to connect with the student group they are leading to ensure that there is trust between everyone in such an unfamiliar place. My experience in the FOCUS program has also allowed me facilitate countless activities, and has taught me how to effectively communicate with people. For safety reasons as well as to educate students about the sites we will be seeing, communication will be a huge part in being a successful leader while in London. In my new role within the community, as a Council member, I have had the chance to see more of the logistics that go into planning events, as well as the day to day activities of the FOCUS office. In addition, I have started to form connections with the coordinators and other faculty around the office that I did not have as a mentor. These growing bounds have helped me see the importance of mutual trust and understanding, which can be especially beneficial when placed in stressful situations, such as traveling in a foreign

Cultural anthropology is the study of people within a particular culture and how those people react to global and local decisions. Cultural anthropology requires that I research many factors before I plunge into what I will study in field research. I have been preparing for this field experience for almost a year now. Within that time I have received a grant and tried to educate myself on the background of the Tingunee culture as best I can, for a culture with no known information. As a safety precaution to myself and whomever I will encounter once I get to Quebin, I have been immunized and have been using the appropriate prophylactic medications. I also thought it best to read up and teach myself languages that are around the area. To properly research the community, I will need to be able to speak to the community as well as government officials. One concern of mine is culture shock. Since nothing is known about Tingunee culture, I am preparing myself for as many scenarios as possible to what I may be entering. If I am not able to look or act comfortable in the culture, there could be a chance that the community will not accept me; in turn making my research…

Traveling, meeting new people, hearing interesting ideas, and understanding other cultures are all important measures of success in the life of a millennial. No one would argue that any of these goals are deleterious, in fact, most would agree that they are lofty goals. When people undergo novel experiences, they grow on a personal level. Traveling opens eyes to see the true scope of the world. Meeting new people facilitates the growth of empathy and patience. New, and often contradicting, ideas hone critical thinking skills and challenge presumptions. Becoming familiar with other cultures allows young people to understand how they fit into the global spiderweb of…

There were many major changes in my life since graduating from high school. First, going to college was one of the major changes that I could remember. I was one of the seven children in my family and the very first one to start college. I remembered my very first time attended college without any guidance from anyone in my family or relatives. I had no clue what college would be like when I stepped foot on campus. People I knew then kept telling me “you are a man now; you’re on your own”. Whether you succeed in your future life was totally dependent on the choices you made in college.…
