Major Career Changes
There were many major changes in my life since graduating from high school. First, going to college was one of the major changes that I could remember. I was one of the seven children in my family and the very first one to start college. I remembered my very first time attended college without any guidance from anyone in my family or relatives. I had no clue what college would be like when I stepped foot on campus. People I knew then kept telling me “you are a man now; you’re on your own”. Whether you succeed in your future life was totally dependent on the choices you made in college. As it turned out, my first two years in college were very confusing and lost. English language was definitely the main obstacle for me. I managed to meet a few friends along the way who gave me many different advices on what major to study and the perspective outlook for jobs. I was very hesitated because I didn’t know what I wanted to do at the time. During my time there, I changed major of studies on several different occasions. One summer I decided to take a semester break, I packed my personal belongings and ventured out to Southern California. The adventurous trip took me seven days. Along the way, I stopped at different places for sight-seeing; I visited the cities to learn peoples’ lifestyle and their cultural interactions. I thought this long trip had taught me so much about life; it made me a stronger and a more mature person than ever before. A sudden scream was about to explode out loud from me “California! Here I come!” I finally came to California with an intention of changing my life around. I was totally in love with the atmosphere, the people and the city. A week later I toured around a couple of different college campuses. Deep inside my heart, I knew what I want to study this time. I picked a college and decided to study here. In the back of my mind, I kept thinking and wondering “if I had known then what I know now, my

David McCullough uses very good examples in this speech. McCullough points out that marriage can be taken away and never thought of again, but your high school diploma will carry on with you forever. Regardless of what you do from here on out, you will always be a high school graduate. McCullough says, “From this day forward truly in sickness and in health, through financial fiascos, through midlife crises, through diminishing tolerance for annoyingness, through every difference, irreconcilable and otherwise, you will stay forever graduated from high school, you and your diplomas as one, ‘til death do you part”. Your diploma will show for that every day. Graduation is a special moment. Your class is united as one receiving the same award and dressed the same. The only thing different is your name. McCullough says that every person is not special but is different in his or her own way.…

It was not like they said it would be. Taking a cold shower from a pipe coming out of the basement wall of a seventy-five-year-old school was not fun. They said this would be the best week of my summer. Until I began writing this essay, I had never thought about the impact my experiences on Appalachian Service Project mission trips had contributed to my transition from childhood to adulthood. However, now I realize that not only was I affecting other people’s lives, but the work I was doing was also changing me. Traveling is a rite of passage for some younger people. Many consider these times rewarding to the psyche of a young adult, as experiences in other lands broaden their senses. College students embark on sabbaticals to spend time in the real world. Others temporarily replant themselves, to experience other places, cultures, and languages, and in doing so to find out more about themselves. And there are that select few who use relocation as a form of escape from their tumultuous lives, because as they say, “the grass is always greener…” Some never return home. Whatever your reason for these journeys, it should be understood that going outside one’s comfort zone can test your mettle, and good judgement and wit are crucial in surviving in a foreign land, where language, culture, and even racism are an issue. A few wrong steps and you may find yourself a few shingles short of a roof over your head. It is that last category of drifters who define “Geese,” where Dina and four other ex-patriots find themselves sharing a one room flat in Japan. These misfortunate individuals are escaping from themselves, and through misplaced pride, ill preparation, and execution find themselves on the brink of self-annihilation, finally regressing into their own futileness.…

It came to a point in my life where I needed to make a decision about where I was going to be in the future and how I was planning to get there. After researching several different options I found the appropriate and most beneficial one would be to return to college. As an adult student I had numerous responsibilities to consider when making that decision. They included having children in college, work, and maintaining the household. The time and commitment needed to complete a degree program and balance these responsibilities can be a challenge. Just the thought of returning to the classroom after so many years gave me that feeling of anxiety and panic. There were so many thoughts crossing my mind, the scariest one being my age. Knowing the majority of my classmates was going to be less than half my age made me feel out of place before I even started. With that fear and so many others still fresh in my mind I began to make the preparations, both mentally and physically, to begin my goal of obtaining a college degree. I needed help; I did not even know where to begin so I started my search for informational resources to guide me through. I came across a book, “The Adult Student’s Guide to Survival and Success” (Siebert and Karr), which turned out to be all the help I needed. Starting with a career and school selection and continuing through the steps of registration, completing the massive amount of paperwork, class scheduling, ordering books, etc. I…
