The Economy Of College Sports

“Fairness, academics and equitable competition” is the mission statement for the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The National Collegiate Athletic Association, also known as the NCAA, is an association that regulates major areas of college athletics for members and student athletes. The organization is defined as a non-profit, and as proclaimed by the president Dr. Mark A. Emmert, “…is committed to providing opportunity for more than 430,000 college students who compete annually in intercollegiate athletics” (NCAA). Recently the NCAA published their financial report for the 2011-2012 fiscal years. The report features a pie chart displaying a revenue breakdown, and distribution of revenue breakdown. I will examine the economic impact in these categories and consider how a possible change in distribution of the revenue to players affects the NCAA purpose and amateurism of the sport. The NCAA vows that “revenue supports intercollegiate athletics opportunities on national and local levels” and provides a chart with a revenue breakdown for the NCAA for the 2011-2012 fiscal year. It is separated into percentages based on: Contributions, Sales and Services, NIT and Eligibility, Investments, Championships, and Television and marketing. Conclusively the data from the NCAA illustrates that a majority of the revenue is from the television/marketing sector as well as championships.
With a generous contract secured with Turner/CBS Sports, “the total rights payment for 2011-12 was $705 million or 81 percent of all NCAA revenue” (NCAA). CBS Sports is a large and well-known broadcaster for sports locally and nationwide. Contracting with a network this large is beneficial for the school, advertising and an important aid in the advancement for the career of athletes.     The football/basketball coach is the highest paid employee at most private and public universities. The maneuvering to pay large amounts of compensation to the coaches via ‘booster organizations’ if there is a State government cap at a public university Not to mention, each bowl game is sponsored by a different company such as AT&T, PlayStation, Chick-Fil-A, etc. The College playoff committee states “A conference will receive $6 million for each team that is selected for the semifinal games. There will be no additional distribution to conferences whose teams qualify for the national championship game. A conference will receive $4 million for each team that plays in a non-playoff bowl under the arrangement (in 2014-2015, the Cotton, Fiesta and Peach Bowls).” In other words, each conference is rewarded for each team that makes the semifinal games. Of course, the athletes themselves receive no compensation it’s only fair right. In an article in the New York Times Magazine “ Let’s Start Paying College Athletes” by Joe Nocera, Nocera himself writes “The hypocrisy that permeates big-money college sports takes your breath away. College football and men’s basketball have become such huge commercial enterprises that together they generate more than $6 billion in annual revenue, more than the National Basketball Association.” Nocera’s point is that the NCAA makes more money than its professional counterpart, none other than the National Basketball Association (NBA) and arguably the most important asset gets paid nothing. The business wouldn’t exist without them. Picture the movie and television industries with the actors/actresses prohibited from making any money. Or everyone in the hospital except the surgeon.     Many have the notion that these athletic programs are self-sustaining, but the money required to run them comes from a multitude of sources just for an individual program to stay afloat. It suggests that the cutting of other resources to cover the high costs may be justified to keep the programs alive. For some colleges however, that still would not be enough, as outside donations are needed to not go into the red. Subsidized dollars were used to hide the true number of actual profitable NCAA programs, thus overvaluing them. In the 2011 fiscal year, only seven of 255 public universities were not subsidized. Those seven colleges had a host of resources such as television contracts, alumni donations, and corporate sponsorships. Many colleges had to look into the student fees as well as their own resources, just to break even, with most not even achieving that.
