Nuclear Power Stations & Fossil Fuelled Power Stations Power Station | Advantages | Dis-Advantages | Nuclear Power Station | A small amount of matter creates a large amount of energy. Almost zero emissions produced. Can be built on any land type. Only needs few people to operate it. Small waste produced. | Very expensive to build and maintain. Waste is dangerous and radio-active. Can be dangerous to workers. If attacked by terrorists is would cause a lot of harm to the surrounding country side. | Fossil Fuelled Power Station | Provides a cheap source of energy. Makes a lot of spaces for jobs. Cheaper to build and maintain than nuclear stations. Easily combustible. Good availability. | The waste that comes out is very harmful to the ozone and also us. More waste is produced. Limited resources – one day we will run out of fossil fuels so these plants have to be destroyed. |

The fossil fuels are coal, oil and natural gas. They are fossil fuels because they were formed from the remains of living organisms millions of years ago. Some day we will have to destroy all of these fossil fuelled power stations because the primary source of fossil fuels are running out and we are not using this resource in a sustainable manner. Scientists are trying to find an alternative source to fossil fuels.
A nuclear power plant is a thermal power station in which the heat source is a nuclear reactor. The heat is used to generate steam which drives a steam turbine connected to a generator which produces electricity. We mainly use nuclear power by splitting uranium atoms. This then produces even more reactions which will lead to more chain reactions. 1 gram of Uranium would be equivalent to 8kg of fossil fuels.

Uranium is constantly going through a process called nuclear decay, which means the atom is splitting apart over a period of time, measured in half-lives.
