I have aspirations of one day owning and/or operating my own set of group homes. The audience that I would like to appeal to with these group home is yet to be determined, but I am aiming at either the field of individuals with intellectual disabilities developmental disabilities or something helping out the youth. Regardless of the direction I choose to take, I want to help people and improve the conditions of their lives. For the past five years, I have been working in the field of social services and have been working with the population of individuals with developmental disabilities and mental health issues. It has been a learning experience and I am taking it all in for the future when I decide to create my own. Over the course of my short career, I have served direct care to a home full of males, a co ed home with males and females, and as a one on one care giver to a young man. I have also had the opportunity to be a supervisor of a home to adults as well. I have seen and learned a lot, good and bad, but I know which things I want to take form this experience and what I want to improve. For this research paper I want to diagnose my previous experiences, list the things that I want to carry with me and change the things that I feel are lacking in this industry. Such things like employee dissatisfaction, high turnover rate, employee motivation and employee relations as a whole are things that I feel can be improved on in this field. The field of social service is geared to provide the best possible service possible for the clients served and at times I feel management forgets about the well being and happiness of the employees. This is something that can be addressed and fixed. In the future it is my duty to create my own brand using my past experiences and visions to be the best that it can be. This diagnosis paper

Starting a group home can be a rewarding way to make a living. With a group home, you have a chance to make a real difference in the lives of disadvantaged children and adults. In return, you receive love from your residents and the satisfaction that you made a positive difference in their lives. If you like caring for people, then a group home business will be fun and a perfect fit for you. The demand for group homes is growing. Often, new group homes fill up as soon as they open. This trend is true for just about every type of group home. For example, group homes for disabled adult children are much in demand. Why? This is because their parents are from the baby boomer generation and they are now retiring... and the baby boomers need to be sure that their children are cared for after they are gone.…

In summer of 2011 I made a decision that would change my life to move from Southern California to Atlanta, Georgia. I was laid off, bored, and wanting a change in my life and with the support of my family and friends I made the move by myself. The first few months down there were a culture shock; I had no friends and no job. One I received a phone call to work for a nonprofit organization called “The Center for Family Resource.” From November 2011 to October 2012 I got a crash course lesson into what the human service field was about. Assisting families with children struggling with rent, food, and the transitional housing project the Center for family Resource has been an instrumental part of the community since its inception in 1960. Working for the company made a person like myself who grew up in a middle-class type family very fortunate and blessed from where I came from.…

I am excited for the challenges I will face in the upcoming chapter of my education that will eventually lead me into an interesting and incredibly rewarding career. I have reflected upon the qualities required of a successful Occupational Therapist and genuinely believe I possess these characteristics. I possess an intrinsic desire to help others and assist them in helping themselves. My determination, listening skills, patience, relatability, and hands-on approach to problem solving skills are key components for the achievement of my goals. I aspire to be of service to others, specifically those in rural communities. Occupational Therapy will allow me to reach out to these populations in many different ways, and allow me to make the greatest contribution to society that I possibly can. If I can make a difference in even one person’s life, my life-long goals will be satisfied. I am certain Occupational Therapy is the right career path for me in every way as it is precisely what I am looking for in a vocation. I know I may not be able to change the world, but I can change the communities I reach out to as an Occupational Therapist. After all, everyone deserves to have the best quality of life possible regardless of age, sex, income, or disability; and I want to leave the world a…

Hello Dr. Aaron Oberman and fellow classmates. I’m excited to be taken this course because I’m almost at the finish line of completing my degree. I have been working in social services for almost 15 years helping adults meeting their needs while aiming at becoming self-sufficient. I enjoy my job, but I’m burned out, meaning my job no longer brings me the same satisfactions as it did 15 years ago. I reevaluated my life giving consideration to my age, family and happiness and decided it was time for a career change. As an undergrad student, I recall an instructor telling us in life most people will have a job and a career. Social Services is currently my job and school counseling will be my career. With age I have learned helping others…

Specifically, mental health and substance abuse. Having worked alongside doctors, nurses, behavior clinicians, and social workers. Moreover, targeting my attention towards a social worker and patient/client interaction has provided me with the thought that this was something I could see myself doing. Which is helping people by providing resources for a person’s situation, empowering them with the “stepping stones” to use the resources available to them. All the while enlightening the patient/client that “their situation” does not have to be something long term, but rather using these resources available to get them where they need to be.…

Currently I enjoy working first-hand with at-risk youth in a residential facility, but would also be interested in exploring employment as a Crisis Stabilizer or even a Care Coordinator to better understand that aspect of working with at-risk youth. As I continue to gain experience working in the social work field, I hope that it will prepare me to eventually be successful when it comes to pursuing my future goal of being employed as a social…
