In summer of 2011 I made a decision that would change my life to move from Southern California to Atlanta, Georgia. I was laid off, bored, and wanting a change in my life and with the support of my family and friends I made the move by myself. The first few months down there were a culture shock; I had no friends and no job. One I received a phone call to work for a nonprofit organization called “The Center for Family Resource.” From November 2011 to October 2012 I got a crash course lesson into what the human service field was about. Assisting families with children struggling with rent, food, and the transitional housing project the Center for family Resource has been an instrumental part of the community since its inception in 1960. Working for the company made a person like myself who grew up in a middle-class type family very fortunate and blessed from where I came from. While working at “CFR,”I had an opportunity of working with some impressive employee’s not only able to assist me while working for the organization but also with this project. Mandy Crimens has been with the organization for 7 years and is the Direct Services of Short Term Housing Case Manager. Working at the Center for Family Resource I was responsible for a number of tasks; first I was the point of contact for everyone who entered the 2
office. I would get their basic information such as name, address, reason for the visit, and from there I would advise them on who they will have to be in contact with. My second title was the intake specialist for the housing department; from there I was responsible for the initial interview with the client in an isolated office the client, and I would meet to discuss his or her personal issues with housing.
