Negative Effects of Technology on
Teenagers
By James Stuart, eHow Contributor

T echnology can be a useful tool for educating teenagers. When used in moderation, it can help students with their studies. However, overuse of technology such as cell phones, computers and television can be harmful in a number of ways. Monitoring your teenager' s use of technology will ensure that he stays safe and healthy.

Health
T eenagers' bodies are still developing and they are establishing the health routines that they will follow as they become adults. Many teenagers spend as much as 21 hours a week in front of the television (csun.edu). Also, research done by Stanford
University indicates that children tend to eat more food while watching television.
T his contributes to child obesity, which can cause very serious health problems later in life.

School
Some researchers, such as Lee Rainie, director of the P ew Research Center, are concerned about the effect of technology on students' studies. According to research reported in the New York T imes, children tend to perform an average of seven tasks, such as texting or checking email, while watching television. T his number is significantly lower for older people. While this helps teach teenagers how to multitask, researchers are concerned that this will limit teenagers' ability to focus, subsequently affecting their performance in school.

Behavior
T eenagers are often discovering themselves and establishing their identity.

Computers, telephones, cars, television---all these gadgets and inventions have only just come about within the past century. Being such recent additions to society, people surely survived before their creation; sadly, there are rarely any people today that understand what that was like. Hardly ever are people not on their smartphones anymore, whether they’re texting their friends, looking something up, or using social media. Whatever the reason, people are constantly relying on technology to do something for them nowadays. The author Ray Bradbury emphasizes this in his short stories, “The Pedestrian” ,“The Veldt”, and “August 2026: There Will Come Soft Rains”, where the main characters rely so heavily on their technologically innovative houses to feed, entertain, and aid them in their daily lives that all the outcomes are anything but positive. Negative consequences like these aren’t fictional like most of the components of Bradbury’s stories, though; scientists have already found many…

The new generation of kids are being affected by technology enormously throughout the growth of technology. Ruth states in her article that a study done by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that children from the age of eight to eighteen are spending more than seven and a half hours a day on technology (Ruth 1). Which affects the children because it cause them to do less physical activity. She also states “The danger with our technology-obsessed kids, Greenfield warns, is that they are no longer accustomed to the full range of mess and meaningful human interaction” (Ruth 2). Kids no longer know how to interact with one another, because they are stuck on technology. Ruth mention in her article how social technology is molding children's brain…

The first solution is parents must partially abstain children from technology by limiting children’s screen time according to American Academy of Pediatrics. The reason is that children don’t need technology to learn just as how current icon don’t need technology to bring them to where they are now. Furthermore, even Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple does not fancy his children playing technology. In fact, when iPad first came out, he banned his children from using them. He has an orthodox functional family that have their dinner table talk. He leads by example to all the tech-savvy and ordinary people out there. The pros of this solution is that we can see the fruition of this solution as children without technology are still becoming the future leader. The con is that technology is evolving and it is unsure whether there is life without technology in the future. The solution will work for the time being before technology controls every aspect of our life.…

Every day at school, I see people with white ear buds blasting music out. Even a girl rapidly texting on her phone under her desk during class. During lunch, my friends always have their iPod or smart phone out. While I was in cultural geography, when we were doing our competency a girl besides me said, "Mr.Lee is there any website on the computer that isn't blocked, so that I could listen to music because my iPod runs out of battery quickly if I listen to music." I know that for some people listening to music helps them, but when I heard this question I thought, "Are you serious?" Also every time I check Facebook (which is rare) there's always the same 8 people posting often and is almost always on. I don't think using these new technological advancements is always a good thing. The worst aspect of many teens today is that they are too obsessed with technology. Although technology provides an easier way to communicate and gives instant-gratification, technology has negatively influenced teenager's social interactions because it removes them from reality, hinders our…

In my time as a student I have written many essays, and I finish them most in about an hour, at least the ones were my phone is not involved. This essay took me all weekend. Not because it was challenging but because every five minutes I stopped typing and checked Instagram. I believe that technology is distracting students in a very powerful yet subtle way. The urge to use technology in class is affecting students by taking up their attention. So many outside distractions make it hard for the teacher to compete with social media for the student’s attention. The worst part might be that students don’t see the effect that technology is having on their attention spans. They don’t see technology as a roadblock for education. People might say that technology enhances education because it gives more information faster, and that is true except for the fact that students are misusing the power of technology by going off track and essentially missing the lesson being taught.…

Denying the fact that teenagers spend too much time on their mobile phones and computers will be an injustice. It will be like lying to ourselves. Being a teenager myself, I willingly admit to the fact that we do spend too much time on our technologies. We cannot help it; with time, incredible inventions have mastered to better our lives and being born in the new generation, the youth have quickly adapted to the changes, particularly the teenagers. While others think this habit is full of catches, it has got its perks as well.…
