My Writing Challenges
Writing essays have always been a challenge for me. I am from Ecuador, my native language is Spanish and, I came to the United States three years ago. With the passage of the time, I have learned to talk in English, but learning to write in English has been much harder for me over these three years. However, I have been noticing some progress in my writing in different ways: Idea generation, structuring the essay, and learning to give good supporting evidence have been some of the biggest improvements I have made in my writing in this last semester. A good essay needs good ideas. By idea generation, I mean that I have learned to think fast and get ideas quickly for my essays. One thing that has really been a challenge for me at the start of the semester in English 5, was getting material and ideas to use in my essay. While doing my essays, I have to see that typing freely works to generate ideas and brainstorming helps to get my ideas clarified. In addition, I also have noticed that making a rough draft has helped me to develop my ideas and also organize them. Now I always start my essays with ideas generation and a rough draft.

English 15 class also improved my writing skills because it taught me to explain everything. Everything needs some sort of explanation or it can be taken in many different ways. In addition, I realized that I needed to be very specific and descriptive when writing. I learned that instead of just saying a car I need to say a black BMW. Therefore, writing in and out of class every week has improved my skills. In addition, I have found that using the librarian is very important to make research topics. They have helped me to find pages where I could find good

When I started this class, I believe I had strong writing skills, and now I believe these skills have strengthened, making me a more conscious writer. Before this class, I have not focused on aspects such as sentence length and specific words that I am using. Instead, I simply wrote and worked on proper grammar. My essay writing skills have definitely improved throughout this class simply due to the fact that I spend more time writing my essays. Now that I have mastered more skills, I can utilize them in every essay from here on out. While I know that I still have room to improve, I am pleased by my progress and I feel more confident about my writing. I have always enjoyed writing essays, but this class has helped me more fully understand the complexities of writing an essay. Previously, most essays I have written have been standard for English classes, and…

Everyday people learn how to be a better English writer and it is successful because mostly everyone in the United States speaks English. In my experience, I’m learning how to become a better English writer everyday by reading books and writing essays. I’ve taken English 60A, English 60B, and now I’m taking English 50. Writing essays and reading article’s in English 50 helps me to become a stronger writer. In my portfolio I am going to edit my best essay that I did in class and I am also going to revise my biggest challenged essay. Although I use speak and write in English everyday in the world, I am still learning how to become a better writer. My experience as a writer in English has grown since the first day in English by learning to use sources in an essay, how to cite properly, to write 650-1000 word essays, and to critique my classmates work.…

One of the biggest challenges that might arise when I’m writing a paper are the errors that I would do in my words by miss spelling them, and the error that I sometimes write one thing, and my mind it thinking another thing. I also make a lot of error in my spelling because I think I wrote the word right and when I read over I see I wrote the words wrong. The second big error I make is that I don’t write a very good topic sentence, it takes me a long time to write a topic sentence or the main topic. I try to write a good main topic, and I take a long time trying to think about a good main topic. I write a couple of main topics, and I pick the one they sound best to me, but when I turn it in to the instructor it’s not a really good main topic.…

My writing has changed a lot in my first-semester essay writing class. I finally took a class that teaches me useful information and how to properly write an essay. Essay Writing overall was a fun experience it was a slow start for me in the beginning but once I was able to get the work done I was fine. There were a lot of positives to taking this class. I started the year struggling to come up with ideas to write about nut now I can brainstorm and put my words down on the paper better than ever. “If I could travel anyplace in the world for free, I would want to go to North Korea. I would love to see what it's like.” I struggled with proper punctuation and the use of commas and such throughout my high school career and I still struggle with it I hope to learn more about it in the near future. “Cars are one of the best inventions ever.” I needed some direction on making my sentences longer with getting to the point at the same time. There's a lot of small things I need to still improve on but I feel like I got a good start with the Essay Writing course. I got a lot of useful feedback from Mrs.Pennings on all my essays like when to use certain words and proper punctuation and some compliments the really…

    APA Reflective Essay

Freshmen year of college is a frightening thing to think, especially the frightening things you hear about it, such as a twenty-page essay APA style. Although actually going through your freshmen year you learn so much more than the four years of high-school you were enrolled in. Over the Spring semester I’ve developed more skills or habits when writing essays in this course as well in my other classes such as History, Marriage and Courtship, and Assessment and Observation. I’ve gotten much better at managing my own time since January giving me a sense of what needs to be done before the deadline approaches. I’ve improved on writing my outlines and become more assertive in my writing. Even before I began English 1320 my outlines were vague and didn’t have much details as to what I have planned on talking about in my essays. My evidence in previous essays wasn’t as credible and present as it is now in my current essays. I’m now able to write more than I used to and not fear the number 1,000 or 2,000 word essays mostly due to the fact of learning to use the database.…

While I was in high school I never recalled writing essays, we wrote paragraph summaries. In high school I was taught the five paragraph strategy without prewriting. When I came to college, I notice everyone had different ways on how to start an essay. Since I was already using the five paragraph strategy, I was a little nervous of how to survive in my English courses. This semester is my second time taking English 1 and there are many reasons for why I did not succeed first semester. It was obvious I had issues with prewriting; I procrastinated, I gave up easily and I did not put in my best effort. I realized when the deadline was a day away; I would rush and try getting the paper done. In the article, “Write Before Writing” by Donald M. Murray, he discussed that everyone have different ways of beginning their essays and if your own way is not successful, then you need to find out what writing signals fit you best. I agree with Murray because of my own experiences. I first started going straight into the five paragraph essay, with no brainstorming or thinking of…

    Struggle of Writing

Over the years, writing went from being a process to becoming a series of many processes. Brainstorming, drafting, revising are just some of the events that take place in writing. Finding a flow for words can be a greater challenge. Words do not write themselves. Since writing is never an easy process, the first thing I want is a plan. The more disorganized a paper becomes the harder it is to fix. Before I start writing, I read the topic several times to get a complete understanding of what I should be writing. I need to think about the topic before I start writing ideas and quotes down on paper. In order to stimulate my thoughts, I may not start writing until hours later. By doing this, my brain has time to process my thoughts throughout the day; ideas may formulate faster. Webs or outlines become frustrating, so those are usually avoided. I like to pour out all of the words that are on my mind and write them on paper. Without good ideas, an essay will get nowhere. In my writing, I may choose to go one path or many paths. Normally, I choose the path that requires the less amount of effort since time is usually against me. This time is different though. I want to evolve as a writer since writing does not come naturally; it is a process that is learned over time with lots of effort (Knoll 5). It is impossible to know the end product of an essay, but this is why the writing process is a mystery. Regardless of the reason one writes, one must allow their creativity to be explored to allow their writing to develop.…

While we’ll concentrate on writing the whole essay, we’ll also work on writing clear sentences and interesting, well-connected paragraphs— not to mention technical issues like grammar (see below). Using our main textbook, William Zinsser’s On Writing Well, we’ll focus especially on eliminating clutter and achieving clarity in our writing (I say “our” because it’s a lifelong process and I still need to work on it, too).…

At the first, writing an essay while English is not your first language is challenging. I started this semester knowing a bit about writing essays when I attended English Language Institute. The essays that I wrote were different from writing academic essays at a university. I started writing draft of my first assignment. I tried hard to push myself to finish two pages. The feeling that I got when the professor said that my essay was on track was pushing me forward to do more. I finish my final draft of my first paper with full three pages I couldn’t believe it and I was very proud of it. I did the same with the second and the third papers also but with more improvement. In the following, you will notice the improvement in my papers while you are reading my work in this portfolio that contains my drafts and my final papers.
