Citations: and References, this taught me the proper way to insert my citations. There is also a thesis generator in this text in chapter 3-3, this has been one of the biggest helps to me in my writing process. The areas and that I believe have improved the most, and that I will continue to work on are my spelling and punctuation. The error log has helped with my spelling and punctuation but I still sometimes make careless mistakes. Though these areas have improved a lot, I will continue to work on these areas.

There was so much information to learn in Introduction to University Writing, it is hard for me to say what was the most important to me. Unit 1, Good Writers are Made Not Born refreshed me on the basics of writing with common misspelled words, punctuation basics , verb tenses and plurals (Chambers, 2015). I really needed this refresher on the basics of writing or the consequences might have been disastrous the farther I got into my college career. The next thing that helped me out immensely was when we worked with APA and how we learned to use the “cite” tool on EBSCO, along with using the website www. Bibme.org to make sure we use the right APA format to reference our sources. I also felt that it was very important that my facilitator recommended her students to look for an outside source, such as the Smarthinking lab or www.paperrater.com to review our writings before our final submission.…

When writing an essay there are steps you should take to build towards that essay. First you brainstorm to get yourself going and get an idea of what you’d like to write. Then, you create an outline that breaks down your essay (choosing angle, intro, thesis, body paragraphs, and conclusion). Using that outline you make longer sentences and create your first draft. After receiving a grade for that first draft, using the comments the professor wrote about your essay, you should revise or rewrite that essay to create your second draft. You then repeat that process and do some minor editing and that would be your final draft. I never used to brainstorm or write an outline, then write my first draft. I would write whatever possibly came to mind and hand it in as my “first” or “rough” draft. I realized, with the help of my professor, that it was in my best interest to use this writing process to organize any information that I’d be using to write my essay.…

ENG101 has taught me the importance of using references and how using the proper writing guidelines can improve someone’s writings. Using references establishes that the thoughts and information that you are providing is accurate and true. When using the proper writing guidelines it helps one put their thoughts into proper order and make sense of what is being said. Using the guidelines also assists in making the writing process not so daunting, by breaking it up into smaller pieces. My writing goals for my next writing course would be to improve on the skills that I have gained while taking this course. I will use more references and the writing guidelines to make my writing the best it can be and not such a daunting task. I need to improve on using better grammar and spelling. I forget where to use commas a lot of the time. Overall, I feel that I did well in this course and learned some valuable tools to take with me to assist in other courses that I will take, as well as my working environment.…

For starters, proofreading should always be done from a hardcopy. Having a pen available for markings prepares you for possible corrections. When proofreading out loud, I do find what also works for me is to read with the proper inflection in my voice. This will help with things like transitional words or when and where to use a comma or period. When I proofread out loud, I also try to do so at least twice. I try to pay close attention to my grammar and sentence usage and flow. In writing, two of my biggest challenges are using the correct verb tense and subject verb agreement. What reading out loud does is to hear myself and if something sounds out of place or awkward, I’m able to fix it. A lot of times when you proofread your eyes will read exactly what you wrote and it does so on the premise of anticipating the next word. The way something reads is quite different than the way something is said, or rather read aloud. A tip that was given to me a while back was that reading out loud allows you to catch things you wouldn’t normally. For instance, reading out loud, allows your ears to catch things your eyes tend to overlook. I have found that reading out loud forces me to not just pay closer attention, but when there is an error I am forced to slow down or stop. Plus this allows me to make the necessary changes on the spot like take out unnecessary words or add needed ones.…

Even though I never had any problems with English throughout high school, I was worried about how college would be like. I thought it would be completely different from high school, when in fact it is not. Personally, I think taking AELW 940 the first half of the semester prepared me well for English 101. Although, I learned a lot in AELW 940 I still had some things to learn and my essays reflected that during English 101. I had problems with comma splices, run on sentences and poor vocabulary. Since then, I started to read and write more on my own time. I feel this is the key that has helped me improve in my writing although it isn’t perfect yet.…

When writing an assignment for my class, I would use what I learned from class. In other words, I will take the tips and strategies that I have learned from the reading and videos in class as the steps to take when writing an assignment. The first step I take when writing for an assignment is to find a topic that interests me. After finding a topic, I will research my topic to get a better understanding of what I am writing. Then I will start my Pre-writing, by organizing my thoughts in an outline form, to help identify my topic sentence, important facts, ideas and a conclusion for my essay. When I have my outline complete, I can start a rough draft from my thoughts and ideas I used to create my outline. With this step, I can construct my rough draft to form an essay that is informative and interesting to my readers. From there, I will begin revising my rough draft. I will do this by going back over my draft to find to see if my ideas supports my thesis statement and that my paper makes sense. The last step in my writing process is editing. Editing gives me the opportunity to look over what I have written, re-read, and I check for spelling and grammar issues. Taking the above steps in writing helps me to finish my final draft and help improve my academic and professional writing in the future.…
