According to Klein (2005), local problems refer to the issues that impact on the society either positively or negatively. Klein (2005) provides that local issues often impact negatively on one group of individuals while at the same time impacting positively on another group of individuals on the society. Local problems affect a small group of individuals that are characterized by the same aspects such as culture and area of residence. For instance, local problem may affect people in the same city or people in the same country that share a common culture. Examples of local problems…
During the past decade there may have been an increase in homelessness due to the struggles of daily life. People have many ideas on ways that the government or communities can help improve these situations. It is not easy to help the homeless but any help can improve their lives and our streets. It may not take them completely off our streets but it can help them to get back on their feet.…
The homeless people I served meals to hated being there. They hated the cloths they wore. They hated having to be feed in order to live. The homeless people there were not like the ones who beg on the street for money. These people were unfortunate to be in there situation, and they were trying to get back on there feet. Their purpose of being at Faith City was to change their life around. I could tell that they did not see many volunteers there, so they were grateful for me for caring for there poor souls. These people never take anything for granted because everything in their life is a struggle. Anything donated will never go to waste, but it will get used to its last straw. The homeless know that they do not get much opportunity so they have to make the most of everything. That is what the taught me, and that is how I want to life my life after this…
What I found most interesting during this activity focused on the social issue of the homeless is how we perceive them. We degrade them terribly and our view is outrageous. I had no idea our perception could be so negative. It also surprised me how us as a society interpret the homeless, automatically thinking they are ‘drug addicts’ or ‘alcoholics’. It is outrageous to see how negatively we think instead of automatically trying to find a way to help.…
Using a long piece of wire, I would hang an empty egg carton to a tree or pole in a city with a large rate of homelessness. I would then hang a bucket directly under the egg carton. Lastly, I would stick a bumper sticker reading "Homeless Helper" on the front of the carton. Inside the carton, people would be free to place business cards, flyers for relatively…
This summer I took a trip with my church to the Appalachian mountains on a service project. The trip was through an organization called the ASP or Appalachian Service Project. The goal of this organization is to make homes dryer, safer and warmer for people in need of better living conditions. Durring my trip there we helped a family with four children all under the age of four. They had electricy but they did not have suffiecent running water. As the week progressed my team of people from my church helped fix the house. We helped this family close a hole in the side of their house made from the previous winter, we helped fix the stairs up the side of the mountain to their house and we gave their plumbing system back to them. All of the things we did made their house safer to live in. The hole that was fixed in the side of the house would cut down the amount of money the family would have to spend on keeping the house warm in the winter, The stairs we built gave them access to their house without the change of slipping down the side of the mountain. The plumbing was fixed and we were able…
Poverty and homelessness are some social issues found around the world in first world countries as well as the third world countries. With the efforts of our help by donation, the cycle of poverty can be broken, one home at a time.…
After watching the homeless videos, I have deep concern and I continually question, why the homeless aren’t being helped, especially with all the wealth in this nation. But I also realize that when almost any of the group needs are not met, it often results in homelessness.…
Though there are many homeless people in New York as well , it was a different feeling because it was mostly children and they were living as if they just needed a hand. Some looked as if a vacuum had sucked up all the meat on their bodies, others looked as if they were straining to live their last day. As I walked passed them, I realized that tears began to fall from my eyes. It was so heartbreaking and painful watching them begging and living as if they were nothing. I gave a few some dollar bills and I talked to them just to show them that they aren't alone and that there are people out there who actually care and appreciate them. After seeing them, I told my cousin to take me to a place where I can just talk to kids my age or under and spend some time with them. Especially after the earthquake that happened on January 12, 2010, I felt as if it was right to give to people that were hurt and even kids who lost their parents and had nowhere to…
Not only gun violence and mass shooting changed my expectation about America but also homeless people was another new experience I didn’t expect before coming. One of the weirdest things my friends taught me, was to do not stare people as much, but I couldn’t let things pass by without watching. I could watch something or someone for long time till I forgot where I was going, my friends decided to give me sunglass so that people couldn’t tell that I am staring to them. It was in that instant when one pregnant homeless caught me off guard and extend her arm toward me asking for help. I felt so bad that I didn’t help, I wish I could have done otherwise.…
To successfully make an impact in this statistic, it is essential that the government learns a method to communicate with the homeless and those living in poverty. The government needs to assign a task force to specifically reach out to the homeless in a first hand manner. While communicating with the poor, it is vital that these representatives mention the importance of proper nutrition and health care. They should also ensure that the homeless know about the numerous publically funded food banks and soup kitchens available for their use. Upon arrival at these locations, the homeless and poor can be asked about job openings for simple tasks which require minimal past work experience. Combining these methods will gradually bring the poor above the poverty line as a community, which will turnover a lower admission rate into the public health…
As I walked around my city to feed the homeless, I chose to go to the first neighborhood I’ve lived in out of several. As I was taking in the nostalgic scenery, I motioned towards a man who took shelter behind a dumpster. Not wanting to startle him, I kindly greeted and offered him one of the many pb&j’s I had prepared earlier.…
One of the major problems that my community suffers from is homelessness, which is a condition of people who lack regular access to housing. According to the institute for the study of Homelessness and Poverty at Weingart Center, an estimated 254,000 men, women and children experience homelessness in Los Angeles County during some part of the year and approximately 82,000 people are homeless on any given night, and is caused by several factors such as mental illness, drug abuse, physical or sexual abuse, and simply not having enough money…
Anyone could go homeless, all it takes is one life changing tragedy. That is why it’s so important that people give back to the homeless by giving back to organizations like the soup kitchen because for some homeless people, those places are their only hope. Instead of neglecting the homeless for not getting a job, we should be doing everything we can to help them get back on their feet. I am truly proud of myself and my group for how much money we raised for the soup kitchen, and how that will help this community. I encourage everyone to do something for the homeless community, whether it be giving them food, money, or clothes, anything will help. “There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up” -John Holmes.…
Recently I learned that a cousin of mine, Jenny, had become homeless. Jenny became homeless not from drugs or mental issues, but through bad luck and poor judgment. Her first mistake was when she became in an unhealthy relationship with a man and had four kids. They struggled throughout the years, but our whole family was there for support. When about everyone had given up on their bad decisions, something had to happen. They tried to live with family members, but that would only last for awhile. The kids were eventually taken…
