Appalachian Service Project Reflection Paper
This summer I took a trip with my church to the Appalachian mountains on a service project. The trip was through an organization called the ASP or Appalachian Service Project. The goal of this organization is to make homes dryer, safer and warmer for people in need of better living conditions. Durring my trip there we helped a family with four children all under the age of four. They had electricy but they did not have suffiecent running water. As the week progressed my team of people from my church helped fix the house. We helped this family close a hole in the side of their house made from the previous winter, we helped fix the stairs up the side of the mountain to their house and we gave their plumbing system back to them. All of the things we did made their house safer to live in. The hole that was fixed in the side of the house would cut down the amount of money the family would have to spend on keeping the house warm in the winter, The stairs we built gave them access to their house without the change of slipping down the side of the mountain. The plumbing was fixed and we were able …show more content…
We learned how people in the poverty lived. This learning experienced opened up new opportunities and chances to help people in need, Lots of people all over the world are in poverty and have a difficult time finding jobs. These people have families they need to care for, however if they do not even have a sufficient home that can keep them safe, it is very difficult to do this. This experience was meaningful to me in the sense that there are people like me that are fortunate to have a safe home and live a life where I have two parents that have jobs and care for me. Not everyone has that. This learning experience has made me strive to do more for my community and the rest of society by helping those in need in any way possible. Even if it is something as simple as helping at a soup kitchen or pantry, every little bit

I am all for helping out those less fortunate than we are, especially children. In this case we were helping children facing adversities ("Littles"), get matched with adult volunteers ("Bigs"). This way they can foster strong, enduring and professionally supported relationships to change lives for the better. Sometimes all you need is a mentor to make your life a lot more…

Over the past summer I had the opportunity to go to Deep Impact in Shelby, North Carolina. Deep Impact is a mission camp that is run by The Baptist Men that gathers youth groups throughout the state to help the needy and to spread the Word of Jesus. There were different mission teams at the camp and I was placed on a construction team. On my construction team, we helped elderly and disabled people by building wheelchair ramps for them. The construction team had three supervisors, and they made the kids on the team do most of the work. We would do different kinds of work like digging out holes for posts, saw boarding, or screwing in decking boards. I really enjoyed this kind of work and it really made me feel good that when we finished, we were…

I served as a student volunteer for Hammer and Nails a non-profit organization that works to serve the community with the mission of improving the quality of lives for low-income families through home repair. Most of the home owners in Canton, Ohio faced financial hardship and could not fund the extensive repair and renovation that their homes needed and thus relied on volunteer services for help. Through my time spent with Hammer and Nails I savored learning about the families within the community and how their lives were impacted by the local volunteers throughout many years. I enjoyed helping in the office with administrative work and with home renovations through painting and carpeting. I learned that a healthy life begins at home, and a clean and well-constructed home contributes to good physical and mental health.…

Appalachin lifestyle is all I know. I’ve grown up around people who are independent, self-reliant, proud, neighborly, humble, modest, patriotic, and share a good sense of humor. Others may call these same people, hicks, rednecks, or hillbillies. I will always enjoy running barefoot through the yard, catching crawdads in the creek, and four-wheeling every weekend, and I can’t forget my great grandma’s soup beans and cornbread. The pantry was always filled with canned beans and homemade applesauce that was out of the garden and from my favorite apple tree. There’s nothing better than getting all the family, friends, and neighbors together for a weenie roast and a game of crocket and horseshoes. Growing up, I’ve thought if there is any more to life than this; and there’s not. There are some pros and cons to this lifestyle and differences in culture styles.…

Overall, this experience was very rewarding because we created nothing into something and as a result our project helped families who generally have lower incomes have the necessary school supplies for their children to be successful in school without forcing them to give up something else up. This project has opened my eyes to things happening around me and allowed me to become a more active and engaged community member while I was able to delve deeper into something that I'm interested and passionate…

It made me feel appreciative for the things that I do have, like a roof over my head and food on the table every night. I may not have the most expensive jeans, or the newest iPhone, but I have everything that I need, and it was all given to me by someone who works a minimum wage job, and works very hard at it every day so our family can have the things we need. I feel as if growing up and seeing what it is like to live on a minimum wage has made me more of a determined person, it has only made me want to strive and try harder, so I can have better things for my kids than I grew up with. If you are always given everything you could ever want, you don’t ever learn how to appreciate what you…

It made me realize how lucky I am to be able to receive a good education everyday, for free. Nowadays, students would do anything not to go to school. In fact, some of us despise school so much that we would consider Dickens lucky. He didn’t have to deal with the stress that comes from school or all the work. Students take their education for granted. This made me appreciate going to school a lot more than I already…

an experience that most of these children would never have the change to have in their lifetime. Life experiences are something that you cannot put a price tag on. Due to the horrible poverty they would have used it for food, clothing, etc. He gave them a life experience that they will carry with them for a…

I will never understand what it is like to be a young African American male. So learning through this young mans experince was very benefical for me. When lookig at what I learned about others I relaized there are so many problems in the world that I will never experince, but I like to informaed of them. I also learned about how wrong some officers are willing to use their power to put others down. I hate hearing that officers are bad, but it is important to learn from their mistakes and see what I should not do ( I know I would never be racisit towards someone but their interaction was a good learning…

Although they had nothing they were still happy people and when we would give them an item such as clothes, toys, or even just basic medicine, they looked so happy because items like clothes, toys, and basic medicine change their life and the Dominican people were very grateful for them. During this trip I realized that in life I take many things for granted and that some of the items I feel are just a part of everyday life and are nothing special are something that can change someone's life. Community service makes me a better person because I recognize the luxuries in life that I am given compared to other people. Serving the least favored open up my eyes to the world round me and shows me what the world is really like outside of my bubble. When I participate community service I become aware that in order to have a happy life you do not need to have the most expensive items all you need are people around you who love and support you. Another realization when performing community service is that you register that helping other people is a very important action to take in order to help the people's lives get better so they can have more opportunities in the world because most of…

This class taught me that it was okay to have different values and morals outside of what is considered to be “the norm.” Growing up I remember only wanting to accept and follow what my family supported because family is so important to me. On the other hand I also learned that I had to also incorporate things that made me happy and value my lifestyle. If my family loved me as much as I loved them they would also always be there for me and they did and that was just a fear I had to overcome. I can also say that being raised by a single mother taught me to be independent and work for my own things. Even though I was an only child for ten years of my childhood I never expected to be spoiled but rather to work and earned my stuff. Now at the age of twenty one I can say that I am the independent women I am because of my experiences with my mother and seeing how she worked hard to raise me and provided for herself and I will be forever grateful for that life…
