Modern Day Slavery Modern day slavery, also know as human trafficking is real and happens everywhere. Slavery today is a hidden crime, making it harder for victims to get help. Slaves today are cheap and disposable. In 1850 slaves cost about $40,00 (Slavery Today). Although illegal everywhere, Modern day slavery happens everyday in places you would least expect it. The United States is the last place you would expect slavery to happen, but it does. Most times, the victim is lured into trafficking being promised a job and a better life. There are about 60,000 slaves in the U.S today ( This Map). They are overworked and underpaid, if paid at all.
