Should We Raise the Minimum Driving Age? Ever since automobiles were introduced to the general public, a minimum driving age has been a topic of controversy. For example, in the year 1909 in the state of Pennsylvania, the age was set for 18 to obtain a license. Fast-forward one-hundred and eight years later and the current Pennsylvania minimum age is 16. Is this change positive or negative? Should the age be higher? Well, the statistics have a rather clear answer to these questions. I believe the minimum driving age should be raised.

Actually, in “Cell Phone Use While Driving Statistics”, Snydar states, “11 teens die every day as a result of texting while driving.” Adding on to that information, an AAA poll found that 94% of teens understand the risks of texting and driving, but 35% do it anyway. This is a large portion of teen drivers that not only understand what they’re risking, but down-right ignore it. This points to the ultimatum that teens simply aren’t responsible enough to drive. While the previous evidence does support the ideology that teens are too irresponsible to drive, there is also a huge barrier that is not surpassed as easily. Driving may just be too imperceptible and dangerous for teens to start driving as early as they do. The article “Teen Driving: Facts and Statistics” claims not only are “Motor vehicles the No. 1 cause of death among teens in the U.S.”, but also “25% of 9th graders report being in a crash as a passenger in their lifetimes.” Teens not only need to stress about their actions when driving, but other drivers, and their peers when riding as a passenger.
