Michael Pollan's 'Out Of The Kitchen, Onto The Couch'
Michael Pollan’s “Out of the Kitchen, Onto the Couch”, is a stimulating article that starts out with Pollan describing how he watches Julia Child on the TV show, “The French Chef” as a child with his mother after school, then eating Julia’s recipes for dinner. Pollan’s purpose in writing this article is to bring people’s attention to the reasons why there is a decrease of home cooking and an increase of processed (fast) foods. Pollan supported his view by taking the readers through culinary history from Julia Child to the Food Network. Pollan’s goal is to encourage people to cook more by themselves rather than ordering food. Pollan discusses further that the rise of fast foods contributed to the steady decline of home cooked meals because viewers care far more about who is cooking, rather than what they are cooking. In which he gave an example of the Food Network chefs such as Martha Stewart, Emeril, Mario Batali, etc. bringing cooking to nearly 100 million American homes. Pollen said the decline of home cooking is due to women working outside the home which I strongly disagree with. I believe that cooking at home is a practice women should have been used to since they were born; living with their parents. I know many married and unmarried women that work almost every day and still provide time to cook at home for their families. I believe women who decide not to cook at home in this century we are in today is because they have decided to focus on other things such as working and making money. They know that if they don’t cook at home, they can just go to a fast food and grab something to eat which is all leading to a decline in home

    In “The Coking Animal”, the author, Michael Pollan, gives his opinion and observations on the American food system. Pollan links the facts that since we look for the most convenient and least time-consuming way to get food, we often intake more calories, sugar, fat, and salts, which are substances our bodies are automatically bound to like. After examining my own eating habits, I realized that these conclusions made by the author are merely accurate. When I am crunched for time, what do I usually decide to eat?
