Michael Lee Stallard, is the president of E Pluribus Partners, a leadership training and consulting firm based in Greenwich, Connecticut. He starts with a story whereby he talks about a leader who engaged his people by valuing them and giving them a voice.

He emphasizes that these two practices adopted by this particular leader bought about great success. For having engaged employees it is not only essential to focus on task excellence but presence of relationship excellence is also important to help leaders achieve sustainable superior performance.
Relationship excellence creates connection and thus helps in greater participation. Relationship excellence, Stallard emphasized, is produced through the presence of 3 core factors which are;

Voice refers to the ability to seek the ideas of others, ability to share ideas and opinions honestly and having the ability to safeguard relational connections whereby when they hurt someone they are quick to apologize and hold no grudges against each other. So the key is to create the connection culture via the core characteristics of value, vision and voice.

This connection created by the help of the above factors is an essential component of keeping employees engaged. Disconnection on the other hand would result in people feeling left out, having no friends, feeling lonely. In such an environment dominant and dictatorship culture is prevalent which plays a major role in diminishing employee engagement.

The culture of indifference causes people to dysfunction resulting in unsustainable superior performance. It is seen via research that Americans consume 2/3rds of worlds illegal drugs (specifically mood altering drugs) and Americans under 15 have lowest life expectancy (due to obesity, drug abuse, alcohol abuse etc). It is thus seen that majority of employees are coming to work with connection deficit and it is essential for leaders to realize this and work on removing the deficit by incorporating the 3 core factors instead of making the deficit worse which would in turn affect employee performance and the overall organizational performance
