Meg Murry Character
“Love. That is what she had that IT did not have.” (p201) The SciFi novel, A Winkle in Time (AWIT) demonstrates the use of love and how underrated and important it really is. Meg Murry goes on a journey to another wold to save her brother. The protagonist, Meg, has many characteristics, including self-doubt, which eventually changes and help her accomplish heroic acts by saving Charles Wallace and changing her attitude forever. To begin, Meg Murry’s characteristics always stood out like a lonely cloud in the clear blue sky. All from her big glasses resting on her nose to fear of being independent, these traits changed in time. “... moonlight shone on her tearstained face; without the glasses her eyes were unexpectedly beautiful.” (p57) This tells us that she cries a lot from being scared and fearful, but also that her glasses hide her facial features along with the fact that she gets emotional easily. Meg also exhibits her fear of doing something on her own but also her bravery in the rising action. “‘All right, I’ll go!’ Meg sobbed.” (p187) In this textual evidence you can tell Meg is feeling pressured into saving Charles Wallace alone, but also open to doing anything that will help her brother from IT. …show more content…

Calvin, Father, and the Mrs W’s are all so proud of Meg since she was able to defeat IT by herself without someone there to hold her hand of give her guidence. Nonetheless, saving Charles Wallace gave Meg confidence to do more things independently and try to help more people instead of people helping

At the beginning of the novel, Meg was self-deprecating and somewhat insecure. She was in her attic bedroom, pondering on how “It’s the weather on top of everything else. On top of me. On top of Meg Murry doing everything wrong” (Page 7). This quote shows how little she thinks of herself; how she thinks she does “Everything Wrong”.…

Calvin’s empathetic emotions show how protective he is, but the reactions of others to his admiration for Meg were on fire! She was by herself about to go see the Black Thing. Meg was on pins and needles because she was unattended and didn’t feel secure. She wanted to hold Calvin’s hand, for protection, but later on, Calvin clasped her hand tight, so she would be safe. This materialized after this scene. Calvin also shows an affectionate charm side of himself. Meg was so scared stiff that she under-went a fusion of fearfulness and terror-stricken emotions. “She was completely alone. She had lost the protection of Calvin’s hand” (64). Meg had been feeling on cloud nine while Calvin was holding her hand preceding this scene. Calvin was shielding…

The monologue isn’t very modern as it is set approximately in the late 1970s which matches the choice of wording they use to describe certain aspects. The time of year is summer as Meg talks about going on Christmas holidays which is summer in Australia. There is no clear response to the time of day as they don’t give any recommendations, though they have already left for holidays, and in general people leave for holidays in the morning though by reflecting it, it shows they have already reached their holiday destination. According to the monologue the time of day is roughly around lunch time as they are unpacking the car and they have already gotten there when Meg found out the present for her dad was left at home. You can see in the first few lines of the monologue that they are talking about their home and describing where Meg thought the present was left. Since the wording is in past tense, they are no longer at home as they have already left to go on holidays to the…

Maggie was so traumatized from her house burning down that she became a timid and under appreciated little girl. Maggie is so self conscious that her mom says she walks like a dog run over by a car: “chin on chest, eyes on ground, feet in shuffle, ever since the fire that burned the other house to the ground.” This shows that Maggie’s lack of self-confidence makes her scared to make eye contact. She thinks that if she cannot see the people around her, then they cannot see her. In addition, Maggie’s noticeable scars have an effect on the way she carries herself. According to Mama, when she was pulling Maggie out of the fire, her arms were sticking to her, “her hair was smoking, and her dress was falling off her in little black papery flakes.” This is significant because it shows how much the fire actually physically scarred her. This fact also explains why she is so afraid of people seeing her. Maggie’s evident abridgement of assurance in herself is caused mostly by the fire.…

In the beginning of each of the writing’s we are immediately portrayed the description of how both Maggie and Laura are not only shy and timid but we experience their lack of self confidence that each of them share. In “Everyday Use” after Alice Walker gives a brief description of the Johnson’s front yard, she instantly explains the lack of confidence that Maggie has for herself due to the scars that were caused by the house fire. “Maggie will be nervous until after her sister goes: she will stand hopelessly in corners, homely and ashamed of the burn scars down her arms and legs, eyeing her sister with a mixture of envy and awe” (69). For Maggie her scars hold no prejudice, she is even ashamed of them to her own sister, one she hasn’t seen in quite some time. A sister that she has known her entire life but the scars prevent her from building a bond two sisters should share. Similar to…

In the book, ‘Three Century Woman”, Meghan is considered a round character. I know this because she changes during the story. In the beginning of the story she said “can’t I just stay in the car and do my homework?” (page 10) instead of walking inside to see her great grandma. Towards the end of the book her character did change. She kissed her on the cheek and said that she will come back to visit her again. This tells me that she had changed a lot during the course of the book. At first she wasn’t too thrilled about seeing her great grandma, but by the end she was very open and positive about it .…
