Medicine River

I enjoyed the book Medicine River, by Thomas King as well as the movie, which was based on the book. Although there were profound differences between the two, they were both pleasantly constructed. Having been instructed to read the book first, I was able to experience the full effect of the story and the message that the author intended for his readers. Although the book and the movie clearly relayed the same story, I would've better enjoyed the movie if it had included more incidents from the book, such as the visit from Harlen Bigbear's estranged brother, and the ‘bridge jump'. I also wish the producer would have incorporated the many flashbacks that the main protagonist, Will, had from his youth. For example, the letters written by his father to his mother; the stories about his mother and her best friend; and the relationship with his brother James, namely, the childhood pranks that they played on one another. I am, however, aware of the time constraints involved when producing a motion picture, and I realize that the script had to be somewhat altered considering the medium at hand. I found the book to be easy, exciting reading because the story line was very realistic and easily relatable. This book flowed for me to a point when, at times, it was difficult to put down. Several scenes pleasantly caught me off guard and some were extremely hilarious, namely, the visit to Martha Oldcrow. I found myself really fond of the characters, especially Harlen Bigbear. Harlen came across as a sort of ‘trickster', but a likable one. He was gentle, caring, and harmless in his own right. Will, the protagonist, was very likable as well. However, his character only evolved for me as a result of Harlen's unconditional and relentless friendship with him. In short, Will's character would've lacked without the likeness of a Harlen Bigbear. The character naming was also very ingenious. The Oldpersons, Prettywomans, baby South Wing, and others

I liked this novel very much because it shows how precious life is, and that drinking and driving is NEVER a good idea. The story makes me realize that with maturity, comes difficult choices, and you must always be wise. Things like this happen every day and people always think, “Oh it won’t happen to me,” but you never know. I would recommend this book to my friends because I think the story line would influence their choices greatly. I think it would give them a better perspective on making good…

While the mysteries kept my attention, my favorite part of this novel was the characters. Todd is a delightful young boy who, while not overly troublesome, gets in his fair share of scrapes. His sisters Libby and Lilly Jean do not start off with much of a role, but they become more important as the novel continues. I found myself laughing with the family, crying with the family, and even getting upset for the family. To me, one of the gifts in writing is to be able to make your audience feel what the characters themselves feel. Ms. Ulmer makes this novel enjoyable by making her characters…

A few main things that i really liked about this book was once Danny got to the camp he was not favored because of who his dad was, in fact it made it even. Harder on him due to the coach he drew as Ed Powers. Page 53 explains why the coach was so hard on Danny as he was living in the past and made up the story of Richie Walker backing out of his offer last minute. I liked that in the book as it lasted all summer and made Danny prove himself at the camp and was not just a free easy pass as his dad was Richie Walker. One other thing that I really like and showed what kind of a kid Danny really was when he stayed in the younger kids group and his room mate Zach was having a ruff time and Danny was there for him and got him to end up liking and staying at camp instead of going home. I didn't really have any dislikes about this book as it included many other…

I loved this book! It was very interesting to me. It was definitely a book that I couldn't put down. When she told about her experiences about making new friends and also losing her family I found this very interesting and heartbreaking to know the pain she must have been going through. A weak point in this book was when Hannelore couldn't find…

I liked this book. I really admired Brigitte’s character. The fact that she was able to leave her fancy lifestyle, family, and extensive opportunities available to her in France, to take care of her ex-husband’s little girl that she had never met before, in a dirty little desert town out in the middle of nowhere, is truly amazing to me. Her character definitely grew throughout this book. I believe she went from being a young woman not knowing what she was getting into, to being a mature loving mother to a ten yr. old little girl who needed her very much.…

The book was very engaging and entertaining to read, but in some parts of the were unnecessary. Like at this one scene how Billy told his dad that Little Ann is “gun shy” but during the championship, Billy’s father brought a gun and it never mentioned about Little Ann being gun shy. But this book gives kids a great role model to look up and I recommend it to children from the age 8+ to read it.…

Have you ever read a book, then watched the movie on it and wanted to throw the book at the director’s face and tell them to actually read the book? This is what happened when I read a novel titled Where The Rivers Flow North by Howard Frank Mosher, and then watched the movie on it. In 1927, in Kingdom County, Vermont, a large dam is to be built; however, Noel Lord, a logger and cedar-oil harvester, won't give up his lifetime lease on the land. The dam company increases its offer of cash, but Noel refuses time after time. He asks for a trade; the white pines for his lease. Noel, meanwhile, talks with his wife, Bangor, about them moving to Oregon and buying a saw mill. She wants him to take the company's money; but he’s stubborn. His stubbornness is what ultimately leads them to their death, causing them both to be victims. Yet in the movie, only one of them meets with their untimely death. Between the book and the movie, three major differences were Noel’s death scene, Bangor’s death, the showing of the panther and Noel becoming a legend and story to tell just like his ancestors. I’m not satisfied with these differences because they don’t portray the book accurately. These key differences can really impact ones thoughts on both the book and the movie and the way one feels about how the director and producers of the movie chose to represent the book.…

The book was an interesting way to look at the future. It made me think that you never know what life has in store for you. The characters were all unique but at the same time they seemed lost in the sense that they didn’t know what they truly wanted. To me, Beatty was a complex character because although he was a fireman and he agreed with society about the trouble caused by books, he himself seemed to use his knowledge acquired from books against Montag. I think the title was very well chosen.…

It had humor, real life events, sadness, and suspense. I would most definitely recommend this novel to someone because although it’s very long, you won’t want to stop reading it. This book will make you wonder, cry, even laugh. It’s a book that I think had great meaning and was put together very well. In my opinion, there is no flaws about this book except how long it is.…

The literature was very well written and you were able to feel the connection between you and the characters. For example when Will and his father were traveling down the stairwell and came to the levels where the main point of the fire was, you could almost feel the heat like you were right beside them. This helped me imagine what these people in this disaster were going through, it really put what happened in perspective for me. Having these outstanding details helped me understand the severity of this horrible event. There were many parts in the story where you could feel the characters pain or struggle, like when Will tripped over a piece of cement when the tower had collapsed, I could feel the pain that he was going through when he thought he lost his father for ever. I feel like this book could improve if there was a little bit more advanced vocabulary, especially during the very intense moments. I would have also liked to see more of an ending, like what happened when they went to pick up Will's friend from the fire station or what happened when he got home to his mom. Having something at the end like that would have made to story more interesting at the end, not just them getting to safety and then the story ending. Overall this book was very intriguing and well written, and I would definitely read this book…

I enjoyed this book thoroughly and always kept me intrigued until the end. It had small twists in it that were rather easy to interpret but it was also very interesting. One reason to read this book is how fast emotions change. On one page the characters are laughing the next they are grieving over a family member who is a victim of a deadly plague that will take life. On one page the main character is rampaging and destroying technology the next she is trying to save her sister's life. If you like books with fast mood changes that this is the book for you. Something that makes this book even better is the cliffhanger ending.…

This book was very different than anything I have ever read. I am still deciding whether I liked it or not. It was hard for me to follow because it kept jumping back in forth in time. The first three chapters I hap kept re-reading to focus and grasp what was going on. I was extremely confused and it went from the opening scene in 1931 to Milkman being four years old in one paragraph. I do feel this is a book you need to read over and over again to fully gain an understanding of the messages and symbols the author was displaying through each character. I thought the book was interesting that although it dealt with racial issues and focused on how characters such as Guitar and Milkman had different views of status and discrimination, their was very little mention of white characters in the book. The majority if not all the characters were black decent and it was purely one sided view on how the black race dealt with racial issues in a small town at that time. I think Pilate was a crazy character and I didn't like how long it dragged out to find the true nature of why her relationship was the way it was with her brother Macon Dead Jr. I feel like the author was changing the subject and jumping around so much that you never fully get to know any one character. I didn't like how the author killed Milkman in the end, it was as if you finally made some self discovery and then he jumps to his death. The book just builds and layers and builds, and when you finally feel like you might understand where it's leading three of the main characters die within the last pages. Aside from racial views and Milkmans self discovery from his life as his fathers son, to discovering his family history and where he wants to be in the future, I didn't really connect with any other character in the book, or understand their significance in his discovering…
