Cedar Cove Chronicles Summary
Todd is book one of the Cedar Cove Chronicles by Cynthia Ulmer. The books take place in 1943 in a small town in North Carolina called Cedar Cove. World War II is ongoing and affects even a small town such as this one. Being such a small town, many of the townspeople are farmers, and the preacher runs the local store.

This book focuses on the Jansan family, specifically their son Todd. Todd Jansan is only 10 and doesn’t know much about the war except that his Uncle Clyde is off fighting somewhere. Clyde returns home from the war suddenly one day, but he seems to be keeping secrets. Todd doesn’t quite know what’s going on, but he knows there is tension between Clyde and his father. There is also a problem with the Jansans’ neighbors, the Hammonds’. Horace Hammond gets drunk often and likes to hold his children over the well by their feet. Todd as well as his sisters are scared of Mr. Hammond, and none of them are allowed on his property for fear of what he may

I enjoy books that have some type of action, and I wasn’t sure that Todd would hold up in that regard. However, the author has enough mystery along with a few twists and turns to really keep the reader interested. The pace, while a little slower, is steady enough that I was able to stay engaged.

While the mysteries kept my attention, my favorite part of this novel was the characters. Todd is a delightful young boy who, while not overly troublesome, gets in his fair share of scrapes. His sisters Libby and Lilly Jean do not start off with much of a role, but they become more important as the novel continues. I found myself laughing with the family, crying with the family, and even getting upset for the family. To me, one of the gifts in writing is to be able to make your audience feel what the characters themselves feel. Ms. Ulmer makes this novel enjoyable by making her characters

I found the beginning of this book quite confusing. I had a difficult time discerning who the main characters were and what was the plot. I also wasn't quite sure when the Mother had died and it wasn't until later that I realized the reason that Carmen was present was because she had traveled home for her mother's funeral. However, once I got into the book and started to put the characters in context, I really began to enjoy it.…

Tim explains the religious background of the town of Redding. People built their houses according to the church they attended, either Anglican or Presbyterian. Tim's family lives in Redding Ridge, which signals that they are Anglicans and therefore loyalist. Tim does not feel he is particularly tied to the loyalist or Rebels, which worries him. Tim speaks of the effects of the war on his home life. He had thought the war would bring battles and great change to his quiet Connecticut village, but it has not. There are no marching armies, no cannons, and no food shortages. There are just lots of talk about the war, as there always was. Occasional the arguments get heated, as when Father throws a man out of the tavern for subversion, by which he means criticism of the British army. Betsy often stops by to listen to conversations, but Tim's mother always shoos her along.…

The main character had a terrible relationship with his father. They didn’t see eye to eye at all. The father just took him to baseball games and left him there with an usher that he paid to watch him. The absence of a father figure was significant to his childhood. When he grew up he tried to be anything but that memory. He was involved in his children’s lives. This would be a family theme where the parent separates themselves from the child, so they could attend to their own matters in life. The next theme can be seen in the family that has the young girl being feed information like a sponge ruining her childhood so she could get ahead intellectually. The parents did not see her as a child but as some sort of machine. It is not the proper way to raise a child. She was socially awkward and didn’t have the social skills to socialize with the other children at Kevin’s birthday party. This theme is where the parents treat the child as an object rather than a living being. The next one is in the single mom with the two kids. She struggles to support for her family and her children disrespect her all the time. The son was so distant from her and left all the time, while the daughter was in love with a troubled boy. The son was having problems with himself since she went through puberty and he didn’t have a father figure to explain all the changes in his body and while he was feeling certain things. Todd became that father figure when he married the boy’s sister and got to explain what was happening through experience. This helped out the single mother trying to support her two children. The youngest son and brother of Gil the main character displayed the same type of parenting as the grandfather did with Gil, abandoning his child and dumping him with whoever would take care of him.…

I chose the book The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket. The story takes place in a “busy” city that is never given a name in no particular era of time. Prior to the story the Baudelaire children live in a mansion in the middle of the city with their parents. They are a happy family. The story begins after the mansion burns, and their parents are killed in the fire.…

The story starts in Florida, where Miles Halter, the central character, lived his whole life. After the first twelve pages, the setting already changes to a boarding school in Alabama called “Culver Creek”. It’s not really obvious if story happened in the past, present or future, but after doing some rereading I found out it must have all happened 2004/2005 (p. 250  Alaskas mother died on 10th January 1997, p.258 Alaskas mother was dead for eight years that day).…

I really enjoyed reading this novel and I felt that it was very interesting to learn about the lives of the Delany's. There were many parts of this book that I liked but there were also some things that I disliked as well. One major component of the book that I thought was intriguing was the fact that most of the words were the Delany sisters' own. I enjoyed listening to the minor details in their lives and the little stories that they would tell. For example, Sadie remembered her first memory of sitting on her mother's lap…

Another important aspect of this book is the band, Dumb. This band faces the challenge of finding a real paying gig. Also having a manager who is deaf and can barely hear the music being played doesn 't really help them achieve their goal. I think Dumb was really great throughout the novel. The reader learned many things about each member you would never have guessed. You could hear everyone’s voices and feelings very clearly even though the story was told through Piper’s point of view. For example, during the story, you get a glimpse of the pain Kallie feels, especially right before…

The main characters are Robert and his cousin Elliot, there's Robert's mom, and his little 5 year-old sister, they lived in a farm but then they all went to Sachem's Head to live with Robert's grandparents, his aunt Nan and uncle Jake, just until his father returns from fighting overseas. His dad was a bomber pilot in Europe. Elliot, the cousin, was the ‘difficult' type of person; he would put barricades and expect you to climb over them. Elliot would have his ‘personal world', not letting others in easily, and he would ignore you if necessary, just so he could stay by himself, so he wouldn't need to give any explanations to anyone. But he didn't have many defenses, as mentioned in the story; Robert could look into his eyes and see everything he was feeling.…

However, Susan Colgate is not like him she my favorite character in the novel. About her in the chapters of the book I read with a great pleasure.
