In Cold Blood Summary The novel takes place in Holcomb, Kansas, a small farming town with a tight knit community. The Clutters are a prominent and cherished family known throughout the town. Herb is a successful farmer, married for 25 years to Bonnie Fox and is the father of four children. At home, two of his children remain; 16 year old Nancy and 15 year old Kenyon. Discovered by two young girls the next morning, the community is struck by the horrific murders of the Clutters on the night of November 15th, 1959, an event too gruesome for anyone to believe. Meanwhile, nearly 400 miles away in Olathe, Kansas, the two killers; ex-convicts; Dick (28) and Perry (31), proceed with a normal evening as if nothing had occurred the night before. The investigation continues in the days following, yet little evidence had been discovered. The town remained fearful that those responsible were still lurking around town; many changed their locks, remained awake throughout the night, and some even moved out of town. On the first day of the trial, a psychologist is called in and brings light to Perry’s traumatic life events. The following day, witnesses are brought to the stand, the last being the most important- Alvin Dewey, who gives the public the first actual description of what occurred that night. Throughout the week, the trial continues and eventually the psychologist diagnoses Perry as possibly being a paranoid schizophrenic. Perry and Dick are sentenced to death, and after a two-year postponement, on April 15th, 1965, they meet their fate. Dick conveys no resentment towards the State; Perry feels that the death penalty is unwarranted. After five years, the case has finally come to an end, a pale vindication for the Clutter
