Massachusetts institute of technology is a private research university . It was established in April 10 , 1861 in response to the developing industrialization of the united states . MIT follow a European polytechnic university model and stressed laboratory instruction in applied science and engineering . It has a total undergraduate membership of 4,527 . The campus size is 168 acres . This institute is situated in Cambridge , Massachusetts , across the Charles river from downtown Boston . The institute is generally known for its research and education in the physical science and engineering and other like: biology , economics , linguistics , and management as well .
