My Kind Act

Through my faith I have learned to believe that we must all do on to others as want others to do on to us; including being kind to others. I had the opportunity to help my sister in law Angie not too long ago. Angie is a single mother of 4 and has 5 grandchildren. A few months ago she was with nowhere to turn; had no place to live and had no job. At this time she had two of kids and her oldest grandchild with her. You see Angie has a great heart and will always help someone in there time of need. There was no way I was going to turn my back on my sister in law so I asked her to come stay with us while she got her situation worked out.

Now I live in a two bedroom apartment with my wife and two kids so the living arrangement where a bit uncomfortable however I was determined to make this work. The second evening of Angie being at my home I sat down her down and gave a plan with goals to help her get back on the way. The first item was to find a job, second item enroll the kids in a school near here, the third item open a bank account and last item divide the chores around the house between both families. These for steps were going to begin to shape her life leading to her one day being on her own. She was pleased and expressed gratitude telling me no one had ever sat with her to advise her in such a manner.

Angie first enrolled the kids at the school my kids attend this was best as I was able to take the kids and pick them up while she focused on other priorities. Every day we sat on the computer sending her resume to different employers. When she would have an interview we would role play to build her confidence and give her knowledge of the interview process. Some short time later she landed a job at a physician’s office. It made my heart warm to see her so happy and that things where finally turning around for her.

While all the time we had divided the chores around the house; teaching the kids responsibility and that they had to help their mother. Angie was in shock as to get them to do anything before was like being in a battle at war. Both kids now understood that the home is for the family and it takes all of to us to make it work just like it takes a whole team to win a game. Since Angie had been working for a few weeks I took her to go open a bank account and show her how to budget her money. In no time Angie was going to be able to be on her own.

It’s now been a few months and Angie has been able to turn her life around. She has now been able to move into her own place with her two kids and grandchild. The kids still do chores to help, especially that she comes home tried from work. I still pick up the kids from school while she is at work; I don’t want her to feel overwhelmed. The most impressive part of Angie is that she is sticking to her budget and keeps saving money. They constantly are reminding of how grateful there are of my kindness. I am so happy that my act of kindness has been able to keep my sister in laws family together and better it.

“Chores allow children an early and sustained opportunity to experience responsibility. Independence and self-sufficiency in life are tied, ultimately, to mastery of two types of responsibility: personal responsibility and social responsibility” (Rowland, 2000, Brown University Child & Adolescent Behavior Letter, 16(6), 1). Though it can said many times, different ways that chores can help your child it is also said that you should never ask your child to do something that you yourself wouldn’t do and they should be used by busy parents to spend more quality time with their child. Essentially helping both the child grow from the responsibilities and allowing the parent to spend more time with the…

There seems to be an inexhaustible number of reasons that one person might go out of his way to assist another. One of the more interesting of these is to give to soothe one's conscience, or to avoid the guilt that comes with not offering help when you can. Ma Joad used this reason to feed the starving children at the first Hooverville they stayed at. She looked at those kids and tried to avoid giving them food so she could feed her family. Even Uncle Tom had a hard time eating his food with those hungry children looking on. Ma eventually soothed her conscience by giving the kids the dregs of the soup kettle, though she knew she should have given the entire helping to her family, as they had less than enough themselves.…

I have fallen guilty to selfish acts more than I am proud to say. I have underestimated the simplicity of taking a couple seconds out of the day, to act on kindness, towards a complete stranger. With that being said, when I came across a homeless man, leaving Walmart, I had all intentions on doing my first act. As I rolled down the window, to give the man money, I dug through my wallet and realized all I had left was a twenty dollar bill. I looked up to hint I did not have any money, but I could not get myself to tell him no. Along with the sadness and pain you could see in his eyes, there was a sense of hope there as well. I took out the twenty and handed it to him. Never in my life have I been so proud. The warm sensation I got all over, knowing, not only did I shock the man, but I shocked myself, was worth it. No amount of money would compare to the feeling I had right then.…

Now a days alot of people are really selfish and self-centered. Few people worry about others, and that is very depressing be\cause everyone should be concerned about other. In the book "To Kill a Mockingbird," when Jem and Scout were getting attacked and Boo wasn't selfish and he went to help them. Boo was concerned for them and for what was wrong with them so he went to protect Jem and Scout from Bob Ewell. What Boo did was an act of kindness and unselfishness, that is what we need now a days. Another example is when my mom was sick and instead of letting her clean and struggle, I cleaned the whole house and dropped my little siblings off at daycare for her. I knew that by doing this I helped her rest her body, and she would be proud and…

I was raised in a very religious catholic home. I was the middle child of five children in a Hispanic family. I grew up in a small Hispanic community near Mexico. As we were growing up we were exposed to people living in poverty and we were expected to help them with what we had. Even though we were not a rich family we would give we would make the effort to donate food and the necessary items to the needy families. We would donate dinners on Christmas Eve to the most unfortunate families with small children for the holiday. This tradition continues to be in my family and now my children are experiencing it. My mother and father have always taught us values and morals. I grew up with the belief to help out people in need. While I was growing up I wanted to be a…

In my current role at Palm Beach Count Food Bank, I have the opportunity to feed people in need. I would love to continue to volunteer on a regular basis, because it changes me, and me perspective. We tend to think of what is not going right in our lives, but when we are intentional about putting others first, a thankful heart starts to develop. For that reason, I think it is crucial to be selfless and focus on the needs of others. I am not saying to neglect one’s needs of family, but to take time to acknowledge all the blessings the Lord has given to us in order to bless others. “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.” (Hebrews 6:10,…

Finally, when I moved to New Orleans I started volunteer work at the Children’s Hospital and helped with pop up clinics for the Latino community twice. Overall I found that helping others shouldn't be something seen as duty or mandatory, it should be spontaneous. Through others experiences and hardships we learn and grow as human beings, not only did I enjoy helping others but I felt that it helped me with my problems. Having moved around so much and meet so many people and living by myself so many years I came to truly be thankful for my blessings and specially for my hardships. Hermann Hesse once said, "I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value." Helping others made me realize that we all need help and that my way to help others would be through their health. It also taught me not to judge anybody, especially if you don't know what they have been through. I am hard believer that everything happens for a reason, and all the weekends I spend watching my parents help others helping others myself made me the determined person that I am today. Finally, the most important lesson I learned was to never give up, no matter how hard the task is or how bad the problem is there will always be someone willing to help and you can always be both sides to that, the helper or the one who needs…

An act of kindness can develop values for both the person receiving the aid and the person offering the support as well as community development. In this summary key points are discussed on altruism. The summary stems from an act of kindness, which was conducted by the author as a student of Capstone Course in Psychology/Psy 490. I presented money to a person who needed money for his or her next meal, without expecting anything in return. A person does not realize the degree of emotions involved in experiencing need nor true concern until he or she begins to offer support with no desire of reward.…

    People Helping People

My interpretation of “people helping people” is “people helping people” can be looked at as a selfless act of encouragement to one individual or a whole community. By helping those with a certain need to only get the profit of satisfaction is a fundamental philosophy to keep our society well-endowed and strong as a community. I have personally demonstrated this in my community by participating in my school’s Operation Christmas Child to help children across the world see what a better life is and to help them reach it on earth, and with God. I also volunteered for four summers at our City’s Park’s Program as a junior counselor, watching children and giving them a place to enjoy their summer outside and also educate them as we took field trips to the Corning Museum of Glass. I personally have lived by my own interpretation of the selfless philosophy of “people helping people”…
