Psychology Paper- Acts of Kindness
“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” (Leo F. Buscaglia) A simple act of kindness can ease one’s fears, touch one’s heart, and rekindle one’s faith in humanity. Kind behavior is among one of the most significant features a human can possess, however, as our lives become cluttered with all the burdens of our society, it becomes easy to lose track of what we live for. When my teacher presented the three acts of kindness project to us, I started to question whether I have been selfish or selfless in my everyday motives. I came to realize that performing random acts of kindness is something that needs to be incorporated more in my life on a regular basis. Therefore, I was eager to get started with my 3 acts.

I have fallen guilty to selfish acts more than I am proud to say. I have underestimated the simplicity of taking a couple seconds out of the day, to act on kindness, towards a complete stranger. With that being said, when I came across a homeless man, leaving Walmart, I had all intentions on doing my first act. As I rolled down the window, to give the man money, I dug through my wallet and realized all I had left was a twenty dollar bill. I looked up to hint I did not have any money, but I could not get myself to tell him no. Along with the sadness and pain you could see in his eyes, there was a sense of hope there as well. I took out the twenty and handed it to him. Never in my life have I been so proud. The warm sensation I got all over, knowing, not only did I shock the man, but I shocked myself, was worth it. No amount of money would compare to the feeling I had right then. We as humans have a way with losing sight of the little things, that should be the outmost important. For example, until this project was presented, I would overlook the simplest acts of kindness others would do, almost as

Do you know what kindness really is? The poem “Kindness”, by Naomi Shihab Nye, is a deep and meaningful poem that uses personification, free verse rhythm, simile, and alliteration to bring out the message that society does not fully understand kindness until one looses something, and this can be seen throughout American history as well. Critics Pamela Steed Hill and Anna Maria Hong give their opinions on Nye’s work. Each…

Near the holiday, we set up a Halloween party for the homeless at Morning Star and the neighborhood children. In this event, food was passed out to those people sitting there cold and alone. Some people even donated clothing to them, so by the end of the night, they were filled with warmth which came apparent from the smiles they flashed. I have learned to uphold a greater respect for others than I did four years ago. Some people may hold less respect for these people by the little that they are able to offer, but I gained even more because they’re there accepting help when in their position and some wouldn’t even show their faces. It wasn’t much that we were able to change, but our small deed made them happy even if it was just for a night which they expressed their bountiful…

As people mention the virtue, generosity, they always conceive of an image of a wealthy philanthropist who donates his money to people in need. However, in my opinion, the concept of generosity exceeds the narrow connotation of giving to others, and not only can rich people become generous; rather, generosity comprises of empathy to share others’ feelings, magnanimous tolerance towards other people, and returning to them with kindness.…

The purpose of this essay is to define empathy and discuss its use on how it is used on a daily basis and what makes people feel empathy for others. Empathy is being able to feel and understand what another person is going through or what they have experienced. Typically, it would be a happiness, sadness or anger that would immediately affect how we feel, we would generally feel the same emotion as the person we are in contact with, where as sympathy we would be in agreement on the emotion, really just respecting one another. I hate fish. No matter what kind of fish, I will avoid eating it at all costs. But that early afternoon in a tiny town named Zacapuato, Jalisco, Mexico, I learned to eat every crumb on my plate, even if it is fish. Our hosts were generous, heart-warming people who had offered my grandparents, my sister, and I a place to stay for about 5 days during our 3-week trip. My sister and I had the opportunity to take a trip down to Mexico with our grandparents to become fluent in Spanish. Over and over, these people showed us acts of kindness during our stay. These experiences have led me to believe that everyone is affected by the power of kindness, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant.…

Blanche is a fading, but nevertheless attractive Southern belle, whose pretensions to virtue and culture only thinly mask her alcoholism and delusions of grandeur. Her poise is an illusion she presents to shield others, and most of all herself, from reality to try to make herself still attractive to new male suitors. Blanche arrives from her hometown of Auriol, Mississippi at the apartment of her sister, Stella Kowalski (Kim Hunter), in the French Quarter of New Orleans, on Elysian Fields Avenue. The local transportation that she takes to arrive there includes a streetcar route named "Desire". The steamy, urban ambiance is a shock to Blanche's nerves.…

Life is not always all about receiving; sometimes, we have to think of others, and give back. This summer for instance, I performed a very unselfish good deed that I will never forget. When someone hears "good deed" one might automatically think that it is giving clothes to the naked, feeding the hunger, or donating blood to Red Cross. My unselfish good deed, however, was far from all those things.…

It would be a day I would never forget of the charity that was shown to my family. It was an early morning on November 23rd 1999 we were on our way to Idaho for thanksgiving, were just outside of Panguitch Utah we struck six horses running down the highway, being in the middle of the night my dad did not have time to stop the minivan that was carrying our entire family. I had just woken up in my hospital bed I wished that it was all a dream, but soon I realized the devastating news I was told last night was true, my mother had died and with that my family lost all of our clothing and blankets, due to the severity of the car accident. My dad had absolutely no money to pay for what was taken, we were dirt poor. There was doctor who showed the most humble kindness a person can offer. My family was provided with food, clothing, and home to stay in until help arrived from loved ones. I was truly grateful for the doctor’s kindness; through his example it made me want to be the kind of person that was willing to change lives. I know that if gratitude would be expressed in every ones day-to-day lives, the world would be a better place, because it will be a place where people show gratitude each other, due to the expression of gratitude an environment of Prosocial behavior will be born, which will create happier, nicer, and healthier people in America.…

    Random Act of Kindness

As will be discussed in class this Thursday (1/29/15), your first formal writing assignment is to write a standard 3 page essay, with a beginning (intro), middle (body), and end (conclusion). This is a Random Acts of Kindness paper and can be on any kind thing you choose to do over the weekend, or in the days after. Your Random Act of Kindness must be an original act, or based on examples I provide in class, and/or are generated by class discussion. Please base your essay on the specific act you chose to bestow. This must be a new “thing” that you do now, NOT a past act. Things to consider: why you chose your act, the reaction of the recipient, and how you felt during and after completing this assignment. For example - the first page may contain your initial thoughts (after you create a totally awesome first line “hook,” of course)when assigned this essay and your thought process in deciding what and when to do your RAOK; while the “body” of your paper (or page 2) may contain the process that you actually went through to carry out your RAOK; and lastly (or page 3) will conclude your experience, perhaps contain the reaction of the benefactor and how their reaction made you feel. All aspects of this assignment either have been or will be discussed and modeled in class. Your rough draft should be typed, MLA formatted, and be 3 full pages in length. You will need to bring a hard copy rough draft in to class for peer edits- remember, the more you bring in for peer edit, the more you have increased your opportunity for feedback and your ability to make informed revisions, but at the VERY least, you must bring in two FULL pages (that is not 1 and 1/2 pages or 1 page, that is TWO FULL pages) to receive credit. Your grade is a combination of following all directions, and submitting both your RD and your final paper on time, according to the due dates and instructions. Therefore, you must meet all aspects of the assignment to earn a grade higher…

During one of my Online Facebook sessions, I was watching a video on random acts of kindness called “Validation”, it reminded me that performing random acts of kindness like simply complimenting people is something that I need to incorporate more into my life on a regular basis. I actually had a warm feeling inside knowing that many people have done so many kind things to me. I too have done many kind things to others; but, I had still not decided to incorporate this small thing into my life. I immediately realized that life is about being a blessing to others; however, there are times when people need to see tangible things done for them. When we give things that are tangible, it is one way to help others see Christ in us. I found out that there are many ways to show random acts of kindness. I had the opportunity to put this concept into action in several ways since our last class.…
