Lgbtq Community Speeches
Alternating from one form of speech to another has always been a struggle for me. Oftentimes what is considered acceptable within my main circle of friends is received as a personal attack on my subgroup of friends. The majority of my friends throughout middle and high school is primarily composed of members of the LGBTQ or LGBTQIA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual or Agender) community. Since nearly everyone in our group does not identify as heterosexual, members of our group rarely ventured out of their comfort zones. Over the years, we constructed a safe space for ourselves and within our secure community we expressed ourselves through the slang we absorbed from neighboring LGBTQ groups. For instance, certain words or phrases accepted by the LGBTQ community today may have held negative connotations in previous generations. Therefore, sometimes I must cautiously rephrase words in my head to ensure that I am sensitive to others around me. Furthermore, the ostensibly exclusive language I converse with my friends generally takes time to comprehend. Consequently, when I bounce from my main group to my non-LGBTQ friends, I think it is essential to omit references altogether so that I can guarantee that no one is excluded from the conversation. Despite the fact that my language style and preference varies per social group, I am forced to communicate differently in various situations and as a result I am capable of thinking abstractly. Although I converse with my LGBTQ friends in English, my diction changes drastically because I frequently opt for words that are openly accepted by the community. In particular, the word ‘queer’ holds an infamous history of being used
